MSD/WSD: Georgia Hosts 2025 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships

February 16, 2025 | Swimming & Diving, Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia swimming and diving teams welcome a loaded field of competitors to Athens for the 2025 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The SEC Championships begin Monday, Feb. 17 and run through Saturday, Feb. 22, beginning with the women's 1-meter event on Monday followed by the full meet starting Tuesday. This year's event is the seventh conference championship held at Gabrielsen Natatorium – the first full co-ed championship since 2019.

Live coverage of all sessions will be available on SEC Network+ with live results available at GeorgiaDogs.com (swimming) and DiveMeets.com (diving), and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.

The Bulldogs will look to improve upon the men's third-place finish and women's fifth-place finish last season at Auburn. During the week, then-senior Jake Magahey (500y freestyle) and then-junior Abby McCulloh (1,650y freestyle) won conference titles, bring the programs' gold medal total to 350 combined.

The No. 7 Georgia men are led by veterans Magahey and redshirt senior Luca Urlando, who is making his return to the SEC Championships after a three-year absence. In his last conference meet, Urlando won three conference titles in Knoxville and was named the SEC Commissioner's Trophy. The Sacramento native has been named SEC Men's Swimmer of the Week four times this season, highlighted by setting a new American Record in the 200y butterfly and a school record in the 100y butterfly at Tennessee. He currently ranks first nationally in both butterfly events. Magahey currently ranks fourth nationally in the 500y freestyle, fifth in the 400y IM, and sixth in the 200y butterfly.

Along with Urlando and Magahey, junior Ruard van Renen and sophomore Tomas Koski look to continue their strong momentum. In the 100y backstroke, van Renen ranks fifth in the SEC and finished sixth in the backstroke events last season. Koski has set new personal-best times in the 100y, 200y, and 500y freestyle this season, entering the program top-10 in each event. Koski ranks sixth nationally in the 200y freestyle and eighth in the 500y freestyle.

On the women's side, No. 11 Georgia is headlined by its distance group, led by defending NCAA champion Abby McCulloh in the mile. McCulloh has posted A-cuts in both the 500y and 1,650y freestyle, ranking third nationally in the mile. Fellow senior Rachel Stege won the 500y free title at the 2023 SEC Championships and ranks fifth nationally in the event with an A-cut time of 4:34.27. Senior Duné Coetzee and junior Shea Furse also provide terrific depth in the event, as does graduate Sloane Reinstein and freshman Marie Landreneau in the middle distance events.

Junior Ieva Maluka, a transfer from Arizona State, has been a fantastic addition in her first season, posting B-cuts in eight separate events. Senior Eboni McCarty previously won a bronze medal in the 100y backstroke in 2023 and will once again be a contender in sprint events.

In diving, the men's team of senior Rhett Hopkins, junior Renato Calderaro, and sophomore Matthew Bray will contend for finals appearances, with Calderaro reaching two ACC championships finals last season at NC State. For the women, junior Hannah Stumpf has qualified for Zones on all three events and posted two top-four finishes at last month's Georgia Diving Invitational. Sophomore Michelle Cummo and freshman Ivy Buckley will also look to add points for the Bulldogs.
