Trio of Bulldogs Score on Opening Day of SEC Championships

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Georgia swimming and diving teams opened the 2024 Southeastern Conference Championships with three top-16 diving finishes Monday afternoon at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
 
Freshman Matthew Bray finished fourth in the consolation final and 12th overall in the men's 1-meter competition, posting a score of 313.65. Bray placed 14th in prelims with a mark of 286.90, highlighted by a 63.00 on his fourth dive that rocketed him to fourth place following the round.
 
Junior Nolan Lewis finished fifth in the B final and 13th overall with a score of 297.80, closing out with 62.00, 55.50, and 54.60 on his final three dives. Lewis posted the Bulldogs' top finish in the prelims with a 10th-place mark of 291.65.
 
Fellow junior Rhett Hopkins followed just behind in sixth place (14th overall) with a score of 296.05, closing strong with scores of 60.45 and 57.60 in the last two rounds. Hopkins improved upon his 15th-place score of 286.60 in prelims.
 
With all three divers scoring, the Bulldogs sit in fourth place with 42 points following the first day of competition.
 
The SEC Championships continue Tuesday with the women's 3-meter, featuring senior Meghan Wenzel and sophomore Hannah Stumpf, and the men's team diving exhibition event. The swimming action will also commence with the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay, with the Georgia men seeded first and women seeded second in the 800y free relay.
