Bulldog Relays Reach Podium on Second Night of SECs

February 20, 2024 | Swimming & Diving, Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

AUBURN, Ala. – A pair of thrilling relays capped off a solid first day of competition for the University of Georgia swimming and diving teams at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships Tuesday at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

In the men's 800-yard freestyle relay, freshman Tomas Koski, senior Jake Magahey, fifth-year Zach Hils, and graduate Bradley Dunham finished second with an A-cut time of 6:06.79, the second-fastest time in program history. After Koski led off with a PB of 1:32.12, the third-fastest time in school history, Georgia went back and forth with Florida down the stretch, holding the lead at the 700-yard mark before the Gators touched first in the end.

Earlier, in the women's 800y freestyle relay, freshman Helena Jones, senior Sloane Reinstein, sophomore Shea Furse, and fifth-year Zoie Hartman earned the bronze medal with an A-cut time of 6:57.10. Jones led off with an opening split of 1:45.12 before Hartman closed the race with a 1:43.56 anchor split. With the finish, the Bulldog women have reached the podium in the event in 26 of the last 27 seasons.

Despite not medaling, both of Georgia's 200y medley relays posted terrific performances. The women's 200y medley relay of junior Eboni McCarty, Hartman, sophomore Emma Norton, and Jones finished fifth with an A-cut time of 1:35.43, the second-fastest mark in school history. McCarty led off with a season-best split of 24.00, while Jones closed at 21.33, the fastest 50y freestyle split of all swimmers.

Dunham joined senior Connor Haigh, sophomore Ruard van Renen, and graduate Dillon Downing to finish fourth in the men's 200y medley relay with an A-cut of 1:23.12, the third-fastest time in program history. Dunham's opening split of 20.86 was a new personal best while Downing's closing 18.28 was a season-best time.

At the diving well, senior Meghan Wenzel and sophomore Hannah Stumpf combined to earn 30 points on 3-meter on the first day of women's competition, with both remaining in contention for the championship final through the final round of prelims. Wenzel notched a career-best 11th place finish in the event with a score of 302.20, followed by Stumpf in 13th with a mark of 290.70. In the men's team exhibition event, the Bulldogs finished seventh with a score of 287.45.

Following two days of action, the Georgia men sit in fourth place with 150 points, while the women stand fifth with 134 points.

The SEC Championships kick into full gear Wednesday with the 500y freestyle, 200y individual medley, 50y freestyle, men's 3-meter, and 200y freestyle relay. Wednesday's prelims session starts at 10:30 a.m. EST, followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. EST.
