Georgia Faces Tennessee in SEC Showdown

January 24, 2020 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a dramatic sweep of Texas A&M two weeks ago, University of Georgia swimming and diving continues its home slate with another ranked Southeastern Conference showdown this Saturday against unbeaten Tennessee at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The meet will be aired live on SEC Network + beginning at 11 a.m. EST, while admission is free for all fans. Live results will also be available on GeorgiaDogs.com and to subscribers on the MeetMobile app.

For the Bulldog men (4-1), Saturday's meet is the 37th all-time meeting between the Bulldogs and Volunteers, with Tennessee holding a 23-13 advantage. For the Lady Bulldogs (4-1), it is the 40th meeting, with Georgia leading the series 33-5-1. In last season's meeting on Jan. 26 in Knoxville, the Volunteers swept both meets by margins of 170-130 (M) and 156-144 (W) respectively.

In its last outing, Georgia rode strong performances in the relay events to a pair of victories over Texas A&M. In the men's dual, the 11th-ranked Bulldogs sealed their upset of the fourth-rated Aggies with a thrilling comeback win in the closing 400 freestyle relay, highlighted by freshman Dillon Downing's anchor split. Elsewhere, junior Camden Murphy again swept the butterfly events in route to his second SEC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor of the season, while fellow junior Greg Reed and senior Walker Higgins also turned in freestyle wins.

Junior Courtney Harnish led the No. 8 Lady Bulldogs in victory with three individual wins and a first-place relay, earning her SEC Women's Co-Swimmer of the Week accolades. Multiple wins were also posted by senior Veronica Burchill, junior Danielle Della Torre and sophomore Dakota Luther, while sophomore Callie Dickinson added a win in the 200 backstroke.

The Tennessee women (6-0) enter Saturday's meet ranked second in the nation by CSCAA, having topped the Lady Bulldogs earlier this season in the Tennessee Invitational. Senior Erika Brown has established herself as one of the nation's top performers with top-five times in five different events, including national bests in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Brown is joined in the top 10 by teammates Meghan Small (200 backstroke / 200 IM / 400 IM), Alexis Yager (200 breaststroke) and Tess Cieplucha, who holds the nation's top 400 IM time.

On the men's side, the 10th-ranked Volunteers (6-0) are powered by senior Matthew Garcia, who ranks in the top 20 in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM, and sophomore Michael Houlie, who sits 10th in the 100 breaststroke. At November's Tennessee Invite, the Volunteers placed second behind the victorious Bulldogs.

Following Saturday's meet, the Bulldogs will return next Saturday for their final dual meet of the season against Emory. The meet is set for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network +. Prior to the meet, the 17 members of Georgia's 2020 senior class will be recognized.
