#12 Georgia Swept by #8 LSU

ATHENS, Ga. - The 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs softball team was swept by eighth-ranked LSU with a 7-4 loss on Sunday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium.

All four of Georgia's runs were the result of home runs by three different Bulldogs, including senior Alyssa DiCarlo and juniors Justice Milz and Ciara Bryan. With that home run, her 18th of the season, DiCarlo tied the all-time Georgia RBI record, recording her 236th career-RBI. Junior Alysen Febrey and freshmen CJ Landrum and Lacey Fincher each recorded a hit apiece, giving Georgia a total of six hits to score four runs.

Redshirt-junior Alley Cutting (7-3) pitched a complete game in the circle for Georgia (25-9). She finished with three strikeouts and surrendered seven runs on nine hits.

"The margin of winning and losing in these kinds of games is pretty small," said Associate Head Coach Tony Baldwin. "We had a couple opportunities. We we make a couple of plays we didn't make, a couple of hits fall, a couple don't, a pitch here and a pitch call there. We just have to keep fighting and competing. I still think we have good days ahead of us and we will keep at it."

The Tigers led off with a single and scored quick off a stand-up double in the top of the first inning. After adding an additional two runs in the top of the first, LSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Georgia loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but left all three runners stranded, trailing at the end of one inning, 3-0.

Cutting settled down after the first inning, retiring ten batters straight before surrendering a double in the top of the fifth. LSU added a run off an error, extending its lead to 4-0 before Cutting loaded the bases with a walk. A sacrifice fly plated one more for the Tigers, sending the Bulldogs into the bottom of the fifth trailing 5-0.

Georgia's four runs were scored off home runs in back-to-back innings. In the bottom of the fifth, DiCarlo plated Georgia's first run of the game with a solo shot over the center field wall and Milz followed with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to cut LSU's lead, 5-2.

The strong sixth inning for Georgia continued as Febrey followed Milz with a single and Bryan scored them both with a two-run home run over the right field wall to get the Bulldogs within one of the Tigers, 5-4. Following a single by Landrum and a walk from DiCarlo and Fincher, Georgia loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to convert, going into the seventh trailing by one.

LSU pulled away in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to grab the 7-4 lead, a deficit Georgia was unable to overcome.

Up next, Georgia will host Georgia Southern Wednesday, March 27 at 6 p.m at Jack Turner Stadium.
