#12 Georgia Snaps Losing Streak With 5-1 Win Over Georgia Southern

ATHENS, Ga.– The 12th-ranked Georgia softball team bounced back Wednesday evening at Jack Turner Stadium with a 5-1 victory over in-state foe Georgia Southern (16-15).
The Bulldogs posted a strong pitching performance by junior Mary Wilson Avant (7-3) throwing six innings, allowing only four hits and striking out six batters. Senior Kylie Bass started in the circle for the Bulldogs (26-9), giving up one hit and striking out three in her one inning of work.
"Kylie is really good at going out there and getting us started off on the right foot," said Associate Head Coach Tony Baldwin. "Mary has had a couple really good days of practice and we wanted to get her out there today. We wanted to make sure she was feeling good going in to the weekend."
Seven different Bulldogs recorded hits led by freshman CJ Landrum and junior Justice Milz who each recorded two hits. Three Bulldogs homered including juniors Ciara Bryan and Milz and freshman Lacey Fincher. Senior Alyssa DiCarlo, junior Alysen Febrey, and sophomore Jessica Morgan each recorded singles to bring the Bulldog's hit total to nine on the evening.
Landrum lead off the first inning with an infield base hit followed by a walk to DiCarlo. Fincher started the scoring for the Bulldogs with a three-run home run to center driving in Landrum and DiCarlo. Milz kept the scoring going with a solo shot to center to give the Bulldogs the early 4-0 lead after one inning.
Georgia Southern got on the board in the fourth inning after a single down the third base line scored a runner from second, narrowing the Bulldog lead to three runs, 4-1.The Eagles threatened again in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Avant escaped the inning forcing a pop out in foul territory to keep the score locked at 4-1.
Bryan ended the four-inning scoring drought for the Bulldogs in the fifth with a solo shot to right center to push the lead back to four, 5-1. Milz followed with a single to center field but was left stranded on second.
The score would hold at 5-1 as the Bulldogs defense recorded three-up, three-down innings in the sixth and seventh innings to improve to 26-9 on the season.
Georgia is back in action this weekend at Auburn. The three-game series kicks off Friday, Mar. 27 at 7 p.m., ET.
