COLUMBIA, S.C. – With a potential last-second equalizer coming just a tick too late, the University of Georgia soccer team fell to No. 11 South Carolina, 2-1, Friday evening before 2,110 spectators at Eugene E. Stone Stadium.

Fast Facts
  • Despite the loss, Georgia (6-5-5, 3-3-3 SEC) outshot South Carolina (12-1-3, 6-0-3 SEC) by a 16-10 margin, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Mya Townes led all players with four shots (two on frame), while four Bulldogs each tallied a pair of shots. The Bulldogs also led in corner kicks, 5-4.
  • South Carolina took the early lead in the 15th minute as Maggie Taitano slid a shot past goalkeeper Jordan Brown into the far-right side of the net.
  • Georgia countered in the 34th minute with a perfectly executed set piece goal as sophomore defender Maddy Herniter headed in fellow sophomore Hailey Gordon's corner kick for the equalizer. For Herniter, it was second career goal, with both coming on corners, while it was Gordon's fifth career assist.
  • The Gamecocks retook the lead in the 71st minute as Reagan Schubach knocked the shot into the bottom right corner from just inside the 18-yard line.
  • In the closing minute, Georgia earned a pair of corner kicks. Following commotion off the second corner, senior midfielder Gabbi Ceballos headed the ball forward, deflecting off the cross bar and down behind the line for a potential equalizer. However, following video review, it was determined the ball crossed line after the clock had expired, preserving South Carolina's win.

Post-Match Quotes
Georgia Head Coach Keidane McAlpine
On the match…
"Tonight was a heartbreaker. I thought we played well enough to get a result, whether a tie or a win. Again, we didn't quite get the breaks I thought we made for ourselves. But at the end of the day, we had to put the ball in the net and we didn't do that. That's a good team. That's a team that knows how to win. We've got to find a way in the next game to put ourselves squarely into the tournament. Can't deny we fought until the end with one second on the clock, we had a chance to tie this thing up. We'll take it, we'll move forward and we'll move on to the next one."
