No. 5/3 Georgia Goes 2-0 on First Day in California

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 5/3 Georgia softball defeated No. 20/24 Cal, 4-2, and Boise State, 4-1, to open play at the 2024 DeMarini Invitational at the Smith Family Stadium.
 
Georgia improves to 15-1 on the season and widens its win streak to six games.

The Bulldogs began the day with a 4-2 win over the Cal Bears (16-2). Lyndi Rae Davis and Sydney Chambley each recorded two hits, combining for half of the Dogs' hits. Sara Mosley and Chambley each drove in two runs.
 
Shelby Walters worked two innings in her start, exiting after taking a line drive off the leg. She would return to the circle in the second game of the day. Lilli Backes (5-0) pitched five innings in relief, giving up one run, but striking out five Cal batters.
 
Georgia didn't waste time putting runs on the board in the first inning. Chambley used a double to drive in two runs and go up 2-0. Chambley scored on a Mosley base hit to widen the quick lead to 3-0.
 
Cal used an RBI groundout in the top of the second to get on the board, 3-1.
 
Mosley used an RBI groundout of her own to widen the lead to 4-1 in the third.
 
An RBI double from Cal in the fourth cut the lead to 4-2.
 
The 4-2 score held en route to Georgia's first victory of the day.
 
No. 5/3 Georgia 4, Boise State 1
Mosley was the lone Dog to pick up two hits in the nightcap, recording one of Georgia's two RBI.
 
Madison Kerpics (5-0) pitched five innings in her start, allowing one run on just two hits. She struck out six Boise State hitters in the contest. Walters pitched the final two innings, earning her first save of the season.
 
An error by the Bronco third baseman allowed Dallis Goodnight to reach and Ellie Armistead to score. A couple of plays later, Goodnight scored on a delayed double steal play to widen the lead to 2-0.
 
Sydney Kuma led off the fourth with a hit, stole second, advanced on a groundout, then scored on a Moseley single to bring the lead to 3-1.
 
The Dogs tacked on another in the fifth when pinch hitter Jaiden Fields plated Goodnight, bringing the lead to 4-0.
 
The Broncos (11-7) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the inning, driving in a run on a double, 4-1.
 
Walters entered and allowed just one hit in two innings to the Broncos.
