Bulldogs Travel to Missouri for SEC Men’s Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Following an undefeated dual meet season, the University of Georgia men's swimming team travels to Columbia, Missouri for the 2021 Southeastern Conference Men's Swimming Championships, being held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

The event opens Tuesday, Feb. 23 and runs through Friday, Feb. 26. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures involving the student-athletes, there will be no spectators allowed inside the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

Each session of the meet will be streamed live on SEC Network+, along with live updates on GeorgiaDogs.com and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app. All streaming links are available on Missouri's SEC Championship Central page.

As a result of the pandemic, the SEC Championships are being split into three different events this year. The SEC Women's Swimming Championships were held last week at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, with Kentucky earning its first conference title. The SEC Diving Championships for both men and women were held concurrently at Missouri during the same time period.

This is the first time the championships have been held in two locations since 1986, when the men's meet was held at LSU and the women's meet occurred at Tennessee. This is also the second time the SEC Championships have been held at Missouri, following the 2016 meet.

No. 4 Georgia enters this week's championships as one of the top contenders in a loaded field that includes seven Top-25 programs, including three of the nation's top five, led by No. 3 Texas A&M. The Bulldogs enter the meet with 46 points in tow, all of which were scored by senior diver Zach Allen, highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the 1-meter final.

Georgia boasts the top seed in three individual events: freshman Jake Magahey in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle and senior Camden Murphy in the 100 butterfly, with Magahey (1,650 free) and Murphy also holding the NCAA's top times this season. Murphy is a two-time defending champion in the 200 butterfly and will look to add to his career haul.

The Georgia men also return redshirt senior Javier Acevedo, who has won three SEC medals, including a 2018 league title in the 100 backstroke. Acevedo ranks in the top four in three events: 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and 200 IM. The backstroke group, in particular, looks to be one of the team's strongest units, with sophomore Ian Grum ranking second in the 200 backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke, and redshirt sophomore Bradley Dunham standing sixth in both races.

Freshman Luca Urlando holds top-five times in both butterfly events and the 200 IM, while junior Andrew Abruzzo provides outstanding top-10 depth in the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly, and 400 IM. Sophomore Dillon Downing leads the sprint group with the No. 4 100 freestyle time and No. 6 50 freestyle time, while senior Greg Reed holds the third-fastest time in the 1,650 freestyle, an event he earned silver in at last year's championships. Finally, senior Jack Dalmolin anchors the breaststroke group with the second-fastest 200 time in the SEC.

In relays, Georgia carries the conference's top times in four events, including three school-record times notched at November's Georgia Invitational. In particular, the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays hold the nation's top mark, with the 200 medley relay ranking second nationally. A first-place time would be the Bulldogs' first SEC relay championship since the 400 freestyle prevailed in 1961.
