Georgia Finishes Third at SEC Women’s Championships

February 20, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – After sitting in 11th place following the first day of competition, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team completed a remarkable comeback, finishing third overall at the 2021 SEC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Finishing the meet with six league champions, Georgia closed with 999 points, earning its highest finish since placing second in 2018. With 1,124 points, Kentucky grabbed its first SEC championship in program history, with Florida following in second at 1,071 points.

Sophomore Zoie Hartman completed a phenomenal meet with her fourth gold medal of the week, taking the 200 breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:05.05, notching the third-fastest time in the nation with her A-cut. Senior Danielle Della Torre picked up the bronze medal with a B-cut time of 2:06.96.

Hartman would go on to anchor the silver medal-winning 400 freestyle relay, joining with freshman Maxine Parker and seniors Courtney Harnish and Gabi Fa'amausili to notch an A-cut time of 3:12.08.

With 96 individual points scored, Hartman tied with Alabama's Rhyan White for the SEC Commissioner's Trophy, awarded to the highest-scoring swimmer. For the meet, Hartman earned six medals, including golds in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 400 medley relay.

Junior Dakota Luther also rewrote the record books with her winning time of 1:52.04 in the 200 butterfly. In defending her conference crown, Luther broke the SEC, school, and Gabrielsen Natatorium records, along with setting the nation's fastest time. Harnish followed in second with a new personal-best time of 1:53.18, posting the sixth-fastest time in program history and completing her career with 16 total medals. Junior Callie Dickinson rounded out the Bulldogs' dominant outing with a fifth-place time of 1:55.84, setting a new PR in the process.

In the 100 freestyle, Parker earned her first individual medal with a B-cut time of 47.75, finishing second in the event. Senior Olivia Anderson led the Bulldogs in the 1,650 freestyle with a fifth-place time of 16:05.63, followed by sophomore Jillian Barczyk in 19th place with a personal-best 16:30.61. Finally, in the 200 backstroke, juniors Maddie Homovich (1:54.28) and Portia Brown (1:55.20) took the B and C final, with Brown pulling out the win in lane eight.

Elsewhere, in Missouri, senior Zach Allen closed out the SEC Diving Championships with a 14th-place score of 274.25 on the platform, finishing the week with 46 valuable points for the Bulldog men next week in Columbia. Bryden Hattie of Tennessee went on to place first in the final.

For the Georgia women, the season continues next weekend with the Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet, running Saturday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, Feb. 28 at Gabrielsen.
