#16 UGA Takes Two From CCSU, MSU

Georgia beat Central Connecticut State 8-2, and also beat Michigan State in the evening showdown.

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 16 Georgia softball team (18-3) took two wins on Saturday with an 8-2 victory over Central Connecticut State (0-4) before a walk-off 4-3 win against Michigan State (11-2).
Dominant pitching against the Blue Devils held CCSU to just two hits, as Brittany Gray and Mary Wilson Avant did a majority of the work, combining for 11 strikeouts. In the second game, the offense came through, as with two outs in the final frame, Lacey Sumerlin put a walk-off RBI single in play to score Kendall Burton.
Freshman Justice Milz led Georgia with four hits on the day while fellow classmates Ciara Bryan and Alysen Febrey hit .500 or better with three hits. Febrey also recorded a team-best three RBI off of her two home runs.
Against CCSU, Georgia used small ball in the second inning to jump ahead 5-0 before a run in the third put the Bulldogs up 6-0. CCSU notched two runs in the fifth, but Febrey knocked out a two-run home run to seal the score at 8-2.
Gray (11-1) earned the win after tossing three hitless innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Avant collected her second save on the season, finishing the final three frames with two hits and six strikeouts.
In the day's final contest, an error allowed new life for MSU, as the Spartans reached the scoreboard first, carrying a 1-0 lead after two. Georgia knotted it in the fourth, as a leadoff single from Sydni Emanuel gave a runner for Alyssa DiCarlo's RBI single.
The teams then traded leadoff home runs, as MSU's Melanie Baccay hit one in the top fifth to go back ahead 2-1. Febrey then hit one in the bottom frame to tie it at 2-all before the Spartans returned to the lead in the sixth with a solo shot from Kaitlyn Eveland.
Miscues from the visitors became Georgia's gain, as the Bulldogs capitalized on one in the sixth to tie it at 3 before another two-out error left Burton on second in the bottom seventh. After intentionally walking DiCarlo, Sumerlin came up to take a 1-2 ball to midfield and bring in Burton for the winning run.
Avant (3-2) earned the win after coming in from the bullpen for two innings, allowing two hits and one run from a home run.
