Columbia, Mo.—A goal in the 12th minute gave the Missouri Tigers (6-4-4, 4-2-1) an early cushion in their 2-0 defeat over the Georgia soccer team Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-9-1, 2-5) finished the weekend going 1-1 after a victory over Mississippi State Friday night at home.
Head coach Billy Lesesne was disappointed with the outcome, but hopes his team cam get back on track.
"They are a difficult team to play against," Lesesne said. "Missouri is very physical and athletic. It came down to them finishing a goal in the first-half. We didn't challenge their keeper enough and when we did we hit it near-post and made it easier on her. In the second-half we gave up another set piece goal. We didn't quite have the quality we needed in the final third. We didn't have as many shots, but when we did, we didn't take advantage of those. One goal and we could've been right back into this thing. We needed something to help swing the momentum and weren't able to get that goal."
The Tigers were first on the scoreboard in the 12th minute when midfielder Melanie Donaldson found a streaking Jessica Johnson. The Mizzou forward punched in a low line drive off of the far left post putting her team up 1-0.
Missouri's second goal came in the 53rd minute off of a free kick. Candace Johnson lobbed in a pass into the box that was headed in by Alli Magaletta. The Bulldogs' attempted several late rallies, but were unable to find any success. Goalkeeper Louise Hogrell made several diving saves to keep the Tigers from furthering their lead.
The Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 21 to seven overall. Mizzou earned three corner kicks to Georgia's five. Hogrell finished with 10 saves.
The Bulldogs return home next Friday to host the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on the SECNetwork+.
