Georgia Relays Earn First Team All-America Honors on Opening Night of NCAAs

March 27, 2025 | Swimming & Diving, Men's Swimming & Diving

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – A pair of top-eight relay finishes and a school record highlighted a tremendous opening night for the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday evening at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Following the first night of competition, Georgia is tied with Indiana for third place overall with 54 points, trailing Texas (74) and California (72).

Events
200y Medley Relay – Georgia immediately made its presence felt in the opening heat of the meet, taking the first heat with a school record time of 1:22.01, dropping nearly a full second from the previous top mark set at the 2023 NCAA Championships. Despite being seeded 17th entering the night, the Bulldogs' time finished eighth overall to earn First Team All-America honors in the event for the first time since 2021. Redshirt senior Luca Urlando led off with a personal-best 50y backstroke split of 20.52, followed by a 23.06 breaststroke split from redshirt sophomore Kristian Pitshugin. Junior Ruard van Renen kept the pace going with a personal-best split of 19.48, followed by freshman Tane Bidois' anchor leg of 18.95, also a PB for the Australian.
800y Freestyle Relay – Georgia earned First Team All-America honors for the fourth time in five years with a third-place time of 3:06.02, the third-fastest mark in program history. Sophomore Tomas Koski led off with a time of 1:30.90, the second-fastest 200y free leadoff in program history. Urlando (1:30.59) and graduate Jake Magahey (1:30.70) both turned in season-best times before senior Reese Branzell anchored with a 1:33.83.
