Georgia Arrives In College Station For SEC Indoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas --- The Georgia track & field teams are set to open postseason competition on Thursday-Saturday when they compete at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by Texas A&M, at the Fasken Indoor Track & Field Facility.

When Do The Bulldogs Start On Thursday?: Georgia will open competition at the SEC Championships with the multi-events on Thursday morning. Ella Rush will open the meet in the pentathlon's 60-meter hurdles at 12:30 p.m. ET while Jordan Fick and Maximus Tucker will run the 60-meter dash at 12:45 to kick off the heptathlon.

Georgia's field events will begin at 5 p.m. as Alon Rogow and Nikolai van Huyssteen compete in the men's pole vault. Brody Buffington and Jehlani Gordon are set to open Georgia's action on the track in the 200m prelims at 6 p.m.

Who Is Ranked In The SEC?: A total of 17 SEC men and women's programs are ranked in the top 25 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings released Monday, including eight in the top 10.  

A nation-best nine SEC women's teams appear in the national top 25 heading into the conference championships. Those teams include No. 1 Arkansas, No. 7 GEORGIA, No. 9 LSU, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 16 Tennessee, No. 18 Florida, and No. 22 Alabama.

On the men's side, eight SEC teams are ranked in the top 25, also a national best. That list of teams includes No. 1 Arkansas, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 7 Auburn, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 12 Florida, No. 15 Mississippi State, No. 17 Ole Miss, and No. 23 Missouri.

Where To Catch The SEC Championships: The SEC Indoor Championships will be streamed by ESPN with Dwight Stones, Dan O'Brien, John Anderson, and Larra Overton providing meet coverage.

Coach Caryl's Comments: "Like it always does, the indoor postseason has come up quickly on us, and we are excited to get SECs started in College Station," Georgia head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. "We have at least 15 freshmen and another group of newcomers all set to compete against the rest of the best in our conference for the first time. I think we are steadily progressing, and I am looking forward to seeing the improvements we make this weekend as we qualify as many people as we can for the NCAA Championships. GO DAWGS!"

What Bulldogs Are Competing?: On the women's side, T'oni Birden, Aaliyah Butler, Sole Frederick, Kieley Gayle, Alisa Gordon, Sydney Harris, Adaejah Hodge, Kaila Jackson, Elena Kulichenko, Kelsie Murrell-Ross, Danah Nembhard, Dejanea Oakley, Karsen Phillips, Stephanie Ratcliffe, Reign Redmond, Ella Rush, Michelle Smith, Haley Tate, Skylynn Townsend, Jaci Wright, and Izzy Yonas are all set to compete for Georgia.

For the men, Brody Buffington, Jacob Carruthers, Shemar Chambers, London Costen, Jordan Fick, Will Floyd, Jehlani Gordon, Ian Hodge, Jayden Keys, Eddie Kurjak, Micah Larry, Ryan Olree, Ervin Pearson, Riyon Rankin, Xai Ricks, Alon Rogow, Conner Rutherford, Maximus Tucker, Nikolai van Huyssteen, and Zavien Wolfe will represent the Bulldogs in College Station.

SEC Debuts: Of Georgia's 41 student-athletes competing in College Station, 18 have previous experience competing at the SEC Indoor Championships. Butler, Gayle, Harris, Jackson, Kulichenko, Murrell-Ross, Phillips, Rush, and Tate all competed at the meet in previous years on the women's side while Buffington, Gordon, Hodge, Larry, Olree, Rankin, Rogow, Rutherford, van Huyssteen, and Wolfe bring SEC experience for the men's team. The remaining 23 student-athletes will be making their SEC indoor debuts during the 2025 iteration of the event.

Indoor SEC Honors: Kulichenko earned SEC Women's Co-Field Athlete of the Week honors following her high jump victory at the Ted Nelson Invitational. The senior cleared 1.90 meters/6 feet, 2.75 inches on her third attempt to defeat her nearest competition by eight inches. She moved to No. 4 on the national list with her best career effort in an indoor opener.
 
Townsend earned the first SEC honor of her career following her performance at the Razorback Invitational, where she finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.30m/43-7.75. The Prosper, Texas, native also competed in the long jump at the Arkansas-hosted meet, finishing eighth with a mark of 6.15m/20-2.25.

A Glimpse At The 2024 SEC Championships: The 2024 SEC Indoor Championships featured a pair of individual title-winning performances and an all-time world best mark as the women's team finished sixth with 47 points and the men took seventh with 38 points. SEC Men's Runner of the Year Christopher Morales Williams was the star of the show, clocking a time of 44.49 in the 400-meter dash to set an all-time world best in the event while securing an SEC title with his Canadian, collegiate, school, meet, and facility record time. Mikeisha Welcome brought home the triple jump title on the women's side with her mark of 13.44m/44-1.25 to pace the Lady Bulldogs at the Arkansas-hosted meet. Other medalists in Fayetteville, Ark., included Nikolai van Huyssteen (2nd – pole vault), Kaila Jackson (3rd – 60m), and Elena Kulichenko (3rd – high jump).
 
Where This Season Will Take The Dogs: Following the SEC Championships, the Bulldogs will have one week off before heading to Virginia Beach, Va., for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15. Georgia will open its outdoor campaign the next weekend, splitting up between the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech and the Black and Gold Invitational at UCF on March 21-22.
