March 16, 2024 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Georgia softball team secured its first Southeastern Conference series victory Saturday in front of a crowd of 2,308 fans at Jack Turner Stadium with a five-inning run-rule victory over Alabama, 11-3.
Dallis Goodnight provided the two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to walk off her former team. Georgia's win streak is now eight as the Bulldogs are 23-2 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play. This is the first series win over Alabama since 2018.
Sara Mosley drove in five of Georgia's 11 runs, which was highlighted by her first-career grand slam. Jayda Kearney and Sydney Kuma also left the yard in the game.
Kearney's 12th home run of the season, a two-run home run, put Georgia out in front 2-0 in the first inning.
Alabama (21-5, 1-4) walked the bases full of Dogs in the bottom of the second, then Mosley knocked her first-career grand slam to widen the Bulldog lead to 6-0.
The Tide broke up Backes' no-hit bid and shutout with one run on two hits in the top of the fourth, putting Bama on the board, 6-1.
Georgia answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, first on a Lyndi Rae Davis RBI single, then a Mosley sacrifice fly, to go back up 8-1.
Alabama scratched two runs across in the fifth to bring the lead back to five, 8-3.
A leadoff Kuma home run started the bottom of the fifth off strong, 9-3. Base hits from Sydney Chambley and Jaydyn Goodwin and a hit-by-pitch (Tyler Ellison) loaded the bases with one out. Goodnight poked a base hit through the right side to plate Chambley and Goodwin, run ruling the Tide, 11-3.
The series finale is slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium. The game will air live on SEC Network.

"I thought that we really got off to a good start in terms of just getting good pitches to hit and doing what we do with Georgia softball. I thought we were present, I thought we were competitive, I thought we controlled the strike zone. When we do that, we can be a pretty good offense and I think we showed that today."
