Georgia Shuts Out Texas A&M, 1-0, in SEC Tournament Opener

November 03, 2024 | Soccer

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Graduate midfielder Dasia Torbert's first-half goal proved to be the difference as the seventh-seeded University of Georgia soccer team defeated Texas A&M, 1-0, in the opening match of the 2024 SEC Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex.

Fast Facts
  • After a pair of early chances, Torbert put Georgia (8-5-6) on the board in the 19th minute as fellow grad midfielder Nicole Vernis picked off a Texas A&M (8-9-2) pass and kicking ahead for the assist. Torbert used her right foot to deposit the ball in the bottom left corner from 16 yards out.
  • The Bulldogs' attack was quiet to start the second half, as junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown preserved the shutout with a leaping save in the 73rd minute. Georgia eventually turned up the pressure, but were unable to add an insurance goal, including a shot from graduate midfielder Amber Nguyen that hit off the cross bar.
  • Following a final save from Brown in the 81st minute, the Georgia defense locked down the Aggies and secured the Bulldogs' fifth SEC Tournament win under Keidane McAlpine.
  • Texas A&M outshot Georgia, 14-12, with both teams tallying four shots on frame. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Summer Denigan led Georgia with shots, while Torbert racked up three. Brown notched four saves and picked up the 20th shutout of her career.
  • With the win, Georgia has now won three straight against Texas A&M and is 12-2-7 against SEC opponents in road and neutral matches.

Post-Match Quotes
Georgia Head Coach Keidane McAlpine
On Sunday's victory over Texas A&M…
"At this time of year, you find a way to win it and keep moving. I thought we started the game with great energy. We had a really great shot at the beginning of the game – found the goal and managed the end of the half well. I didn't think we played our best in the second half, but still managed to have a couple of really good opportunities. All in all, we did well. Extremely happy for Dasia. Texas A&M was the team she got hurt against and she hasn't played in the SEC Tournament. For her to get into the tournament and find a goal, it gives her an experience that she's never had and help the team win."
