The Starting 5...
- Georgia returns to the friendly confines of Stegeman Coliseum on Tuesday to host Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs are looking to extend a 21-game home winning streak against non-conference foes.
- The Bulldogs are 4-0 on the season, defeating Tennessee Tech, Texas Southern, North Florida and Georgia Tech by an average of 13.5 points per game.
- Georgia entered this week ranked No. 6 nationally with a +16.3 rebound margin per game, including a school-record +30 (53-23) effort against Texas Southern on Nov. 10.
- Asa Newell exploded for 26 points in the Bulldogs' season opener against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 4. That tied Dominique Wilkins for the most points ever by a UGA freshman in their collegiate debut. Wilkins scored 26 points against Troy State on Nov. 22, 1979, in his first game as a Bulldog.
- Both Georgia's freshman and transfer recruiting classes in 2024 were ranked among the top 10 nationally. The transfers were dubbed No. 8 by On3.com, while the freshmen were rated No. 10 by 247Sports.com and Rivals.com.
THE OPENING TIP
Georgia will welcome Alabama A&M on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in a battle of Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum.
Georgia is 4-0 on the season, capturing its quartet of victories in relatively dominant fashion. The Bulldogs have led for 142:10 of the 160 minutes they have played to date, 88.9 percent of the time. Georgia trailed for just 4:15 in its first three games before leading Georgia Tech for only 29:40 last Friday night at McCamish Pavilion.
The Bulldogs are looking to extend their 21-game non-conference winning streak at Stegeman Coliseum that spans Mike White's three seasons in Athens.
A quintet of Bulldogs are averaging double digits to date. Freshman Asa Newell, whose 26 points against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 4 equaled Dominique Wilkins' UGA record for the highest offensive output by a Bulldog freshman in their debut, is averaging a team-high 16.8 ppg.
Georgia's additional double-figure point producers are Dakota Leffew (15.5 ppg), Silas Demary Jr. (14.5 ppg), Tyrin Lawrence (11.0 ppg) and Blue Cain (10.5 ppg). RJ Godfrey paces the Bulldogs on the glass, averaging 8.5 rpg after posting double-doubles in two of the season's first three games.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Alabama A&M is 3-1 on the year, opening the campaign with a trio of wins before falling at Tennessee State last Saturday. The Bulldogs are averaging an eye-catching 99.5 points per game, which as of Monday ranked No. 5 among the 364 men's basketball programs competing at the Division I level this season.
Chad Moodie, a sophomore forward from nearby Grayson High School, sports teamleading averages of 14.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game with A&M.
London Riley, a senior guard from Atlanta who played at Discovery High School, and AC Bryant also are scoring at a double-figure rate for the Bulldogs, contributing 13.7 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. There are five Peach State natives on
Alabama A&M's roster. In addition to Moodie and Riley, Bilal Abdur-Rahman is from Norcross High and both Jaylen Colon and Aaron Smith played at Kell High School.
SERIES HISTORY WITH A&M
Georgia has won all three previous meetings with Alabama A&M, most recently securing an 93-73 decision on Dec. 30 last season.
Blue Cain equaled what was then his career-high scoring output with 18 points to the Bulldogs in their final tuneup before SEC play. A complete box score from that contest can be found to the right.
Cain converted on 7-of-9 shots from the floor to produce the best single-game field goal percentage (.778) by any Bulldog at that point last season.
After leading 15-13 at the 11:05 mark of the first half, Georgia outscored A&M 31-11 over the rest of the period to finish with a seasonbest 46 first-half points.
The victory provided the Bulldogs with their 10th win of the season before the calendar flipped, marking just the forth time in 119 seasons that Georgia secured a double-figure win total before January along with the 1996-97, 2001-02 and 2010-11 campaigns.
LAST TIME OUT
Silas Demary Jr.'s season-high efforts of 18 points and seven rebounds led Georgia in a 77-69 victory over Georgia Tech last Friday night at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The contest was the 200th on the hardwood between the intrastate arch rivals.
Asa Newell scored 14 points, while Dakota Leffew chipped in 11 points and Blue Cain added 10. Somto Cyril notched nine points and four boards, both season bests.
Georgia controlled the most of the contest, gradually building a 27-19 halftime lead. After the Yellow Jackets opened the second stanza with a 20-9 run, the Bulldogs responded in kind with a 14-0 surge of their own to go up 50-39 with 7:23 remaining. Georgia's lead topped out at 69-54 with just 2:00 on the clock.
