Former Bulldog representing country for third time
ATHENS, Ga. — Former Georgia Bulldog Justin Abson will return to the Jamaican National Team to play a pair of qualifying games for the 2027 FIBA World Cup this weekend.
Jamaica will face the Bahamas in Nassau tonight before traveling to Canada for a second game in Hamilton, Ontario, just south or Toronto, on Tuesday. The contests are part of the Americas World Cup Qualifiers, which will be staged in six windows between now and next March. The 2027 World Cup will be held August 27-September 12 in Qatar.
Abson graduated from Georgia in May after two seasons with the Bulldogs and earning his bachelor's degree in Sport Management. He played in 59 games at Georgia, averaging 2.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game and helping the Bulldogs earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids. Abson blocked 51 shots last season, the 12th best single-season tally in program history. He finished the season ranked No. 3 in the SEC and No. 58 nationally in blocks at 1.7 rejections per game.
This will be Abson's third time representing Jamaica.
Last August, he helped Jamaica compile a 2-1 record in the FIBA Americas World Cup Pre-Qualifying tournament in Ciudad Obregón, Mexico. Abson averaged 5.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in those contests.
In 2022, he was a member of Jamaica's 3x3 team for the Carribean Games in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe.
Abson is eligible to compete for Jamaica because his mother, Cheryl McDonnough, is a native of the island.
