No. 5 Georgia Begins Spring With Loss To Baylor
January 27, 2024 | Equestrian
WACO, Texas --- The No. 5 Georgia equestrian team closed the gap in the final event of the day, but fell to the Baylor Bears, 11-8, at the Willis Family Equestrian Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs took home both Western Most Outstanding Performer honors with seniors Gracie Himes and Hannah Jane Lucas being recognized for their rides. Himes scored a 73.5 in Horsemanship and Lucas received a 69.5 in Reining.
"Today did not go as we had planned or foreseen," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. "It shows that we continue to have things to work on. What I am really proud of is the amount of fight and return to play that our riders demonstrated. You can see that with the way we closed out in Reining- coming out in a dominate way. I think our riders rode strong with a lot of presence. It was little things that we cannot have when we're out on the road competing. Special congratulations to our MOP winners- Gracie Himes and Hannah Jane Lucas."
The Bulldogs fell behind early with the Bears taking all five Fences points. Freshman Tessa Downey had a close matchup with Baylor's Madi Mitchell, dropping the point by one with a score of 83.
The Bulldogs picked up three points in Horsemanship. Himes put the Bulldogs on the board with her win by two points over her Baylor opponent, earning MOP honors. Leah Anderson won the next point, 73- 71 and Jillian Stopperich rode to a score of 73.5, topping her counterpart's score of 69.
Meanwhile in Flat, Sophia Pill won Georgia's lone Jumping Seat point of the day. She defeated Baylor's Dominika Silvestri, 91-82.
Georgia trailed 10-4 with only Reining remaining.
The Bulldogs won four points in the final event, but it was not enough to overtake the Bears on their footing. Lucas won the first point of the event and collected MOP honors for her ride before Raegan Shepherd topped her opponent, 69.5-67. Caitlin Lyons scored a 70 for her ride, bettering Kalena Reynolds' 66.5. In the final ride of the day, Jax Bound scored a 68 defeating her opponent who received a zero.
Next up, the Bulldogs are home against Auburn on Saturday, February 10 at the UGA Equestrian Complex in Bishop. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
