February 18, 2023 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Georgia softball team fell to No. 19 Stanford, 3-0, and defeated St. John's, 9-7, on day two of the Red & Black Showcase at Jack Turner Stadium.

The Bulldogs are no 6-2 on the season.

No. 19 Stanford 3, No. 13 Georgia 0
Junior Madison Kerpics (1-2) pitched four and a third innings in her start prior to being relieved by graduate Shelby Walters. Kerpics suffered the loss, striking out one and allowing all three runs on five hits. Walters finished the afternoon with two strikeouts and three hits against her in the final two and two-thirds innings.

At the plate, Georgia was held to three hits in the game, combined for by Jaydyn Goodwin, Jaiden Fields, and Sydney Kuma

In the first, a double by Stanford's (7-2) catcher Aly Kaneshiro scored Emily Jones all the way from first to start off the game. A double play induced Sydney Kuma wrapped up the third inning.

The Cardinal led the Bulldogs 1-0 until the fifth inning when a series of hits by Jones, Emily Schultz, and Sydney Steele - aided by a Georgia fielding error - increased the Stanford lead to 3-0.

Stanford's NiJaree Canady held Georgia's scoreless in the sixth and seventh to capture the win for the Cardinal.

No. 13 Georgia 9, St. John's 7
The Bulldogs' offense narrowly out-hit the Red Storm 8-7 in the nightcap. Freshman Goodwin went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Senior Sara Mosely blasted two two-run home runs and touched home three times. Kuma provided the other big hit in the game, a three-run double in the fifth.

Sophomore Kylie Macy worked a total of three and two-thirds innings, starting the game then re-entering in the seventh. She earned Georgia's first save of the season and allowed four total hits, one run, and struck out three. Freshman Destin Howard (1-0) earned the win in relief, the first of her career, working one and one-third scoreless innings.

St. John's (1-5) manufactured a run in the top of the second to go ahead 1-0. A leadoff walk was bunted to second, took third on a base hit, and scored on an RBI single to right off the bat of Natalie Alheidt.

The Dogs broke through in the bottom of the third with five runs. With bases loaded and two out, a walk to Sydney Chambley pushed in a run to tie the game, 1-1. Kuma blasted a double to right field to clear the bases and go ahead 4-1. She immediately scored on a base hit off the bat of Lyndi Rae Davis to complete the five-run inning, 5-1.

A two-run blast off the bat of Mosley widened Georgia's lead to six in the fourth, 7-1.

St. John's London Jarrard narrowed the Bulldog lead with a three-run home run to right center in the top of the fifth, 7-4.

Mosley's second home run of the game, another two-run shot in the fifth, widened the lead back to 9-4 for the Dogs.

A pair of home runs in the top of the seventh cut the lead to 9-7. Macy re-entered for Riley Orcutt to close the game and secure her first save of the 2023 season.
