No. 5 Georgia Defeats Sixth-Ranked Oklahoma State, 11-6

November 18, 2023 | Equestrian

BISHOP, Ga. – The No. 5 University of Georgia equestrian team topped the sixth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 11-6, Saturday afternoon at the UGA Equestrian Complex.

Georgia (4-3) collected three Most Outstanding Performer honors. Sophia Pilla was honored in Flat after collecting the highest score of the afternoon with a 90. Tessa Brown was recognized for her winning score of 89 in Fences. Shelby Lynch earned honors in Reining, securing a close point in the event.

"Great to be out here today with a beautiful riding atmosphere, a beautiful fan atmosphere, princess day; there were just so many wonderful things about today," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig. "Most of all, coming out here to earn a great big 'W', from a lot of dominant rides. Three MOPs with outstanding and masterful rides. It was also so wonderful to see the variety and the depth of the team in who was receiving those rides. Having said that, I feel like the score could have been a bit bigger. There were some opportunities of gaps that we didn't quite close, so as much as we're sitting nicely with a 'W' on today, there are a lot of ladies that are really spirited and ready to close those gaps and take an error into a 90 ride. I'm proud of how we closed this and didn't allow it to get away from us in any way shape or form, but very excited to compete again in January."

A back-and-forth effort from both teams started competition in Flat. Isabella David scored the first point for the Bulldogs with a score of 86. Pilla tied the board with a score of 90. A score of 79 from Catalina Peralta secured a 3-2 win in Flat for Georgia.

Meanwhile in Reining, both teams grabbed a pair of points to even the score in the event. Lynch edged her opponent by a slim margin with a 71.5 to score first for Georgia in the event. Caitlin Lyons rode to a 70 to put a second point on the board for the Bulldogs. Reagan Shepherd matched her opponent with a 72 to push the point. Oklahoma State (2-4) claimed the final point to tie the Reining score, 2-2.

The Bulldogs held a slim 5-4 lead after two events.

Georgia collected four points in Fences. Emma Reichow claimed the first point, outscoring her opponent with an 86. Brown earned a second point for Georgia with a commanding 89. Tessa Downey and Jennifer Staniloff rounded out the event for the Bulldogs with an 86 and an 88, respectively.

The Cowgirls collected the first two points in Horsemanship. Austin Layer put a point on the board for the Bulldogs with a 76.5, barely edging out her opponent who scored a 76. Jillian Stopperich's score of 77 earned a second point for Georgia to tie the event board. Jordan Davis' score of 75 pushed the point to tie the event, 2-2.

The Bulldogs will enjoy a break before returning to action to open their spring schedule on Jan. 27 against Baylor in Waco, Texas.
