Georgia Defeats Sweet Briar in National Champion Showdown

February 04, 2022 | Equestrian

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – In a face off between the reigning Dual and Single Discipline National Champions, the University of Georgia equestrian team defeated Sweet Briar College, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at the Harriet Howell Rogers Riding Center.

Sophomore riders Jordan Toering and Sophia Pilla took home both Most Outstanding Player Honors. Toering scored an 87 in Fences and Pilla scored a 90 in Flat, a new high score for the rider.

"I'm impressed with our rides today," said head coach Meghan Boenig. "This was a place we were going in a little bit blind not knowing the horses, program, location or any part and piece so we had to rely on a lot of feel and great observation. In many cases, we rose to the occasion. As always, things we want to continue to work on, continue to build and be good at adjusting. I'm really proud of them. Great rides by our MOPs, high scores that were well deserved and looking forward to putting this to use in our meet against Texas A&M next week."

Competition started in Fences with Georgia (4-2, 1-2 SEC) winning four-of-the-five points over the Vixens (4-2). Isabelle Song fell 79-72 to Sweet Briar's Emmy Longest. Rachel McMullen and Hayley Mairano both earned 82's, putting Georgia on the board. Emma Reichow claimed the third point for the Bulldogs with a 72-65 win. Toering earned the final Fences point with an 87.

Georgia led Sweet Briar 4-1 going into the Flat competition.

Toering opened the Flat competition for Georgia and defeated her opponent 85.5-81.5. Both Mairano and Nora Andrews fell to their Sweet Briar opponents, cutting down the Bulldogs' lead to a two-point margin, 5-3.

Pilla went on to secure the win and defeat her Vixen competitor 90-75. Closing out the meet, Ceci Bresch's 88.5 claimed the final point for the Bulldogs.
Up next, Georgia will host Texas A&M at home on Saturday Feb. 12, at 10:00a.m. ET.
