Georgia Falls to No. 19 Tennessee, 2-0
October 09, 2022 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – Two goals in less than a minute propelled No. 19 Tennessee past the University of Georgia soccer team, 2-0, on Sunday evening at the Turner Soccer Complex in front of a crowd of 1,727 spectators and an SEC Network nationally televised audience.
Tennessee (9-3-1, 5-1 SEC) scored back-to-back goals late in the second half. Claudia Dipasupil netted the first goal of the evening following a Lady Vols corner kick. Jaida Thomas sent a ball past sophomore goalkeeper Liz Beardsley off a pass from Taylor Huff to put Tennessee up, 2-0, less than a minute later.
The Lady Vols outshot Georgia (8-5-1, 2-3-1 SEC) by a 16-6 margin, putting five shots on goal to Georgia's three. Beardsley recorded three saves on the evening for the full 90 minutes.
"The difference in the game, I thought for a large period of the game, was possession," Georgia head coach Keidane McApline said following the match. "I thought we played in their end for a large part of the game. The difference was they were willing to take chances. They were willing to take risks. We have to be willing to be more determined in taking those moments and taking those risks. I didn't think we closed the game, and to me, that's the difference in the game - the shear moments, the risks they took and the chances. We had some opportunities to take them, and we just didn't take them."
Both teams were scoreless coming out of halftime. In the 77th minute, Dipasupil used a rebounded blocked shot in the keeper's box to put the Lady Vols on the board, 1-0. Less than one minute later, Huff connected with Thomas, who sent a shot past a diving Beardsley, to score the second goal for Tennessee.
Georgia will return to the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. to play host to Missouri on Fútbol Fiesta night. The match will be streamed on SEC Network+.
