Georgia Tops Kentucky, 3-0, for Third-Consecutive Shutout
October 23, 2022 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. – With a nearly instantaneous lead to power them, the University of Georgia soccer team posted its third-consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Kentucky Sunday afternoon before 615 spectators at the Bell Soccer Complex.
Georgia (11-5-1, 5-3-1 SEC) outshot Kentucky (7-8-2, 0-7-2 SEC) by a 15-4 margin, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on frame. The Georgia backline only allowed two Kentucky corner kicks, while the Bulldog attack earned six. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brown tallied two assists as she notched a third-straight clean sheet.
"At this time of year, a win is all we're trying to get," said Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine following the match. "We weren't our best, especially in the first half. We got a good early goal, but we didn't bring the energy and urgency that we want. In the second half, we found a way. We got a couple extra goals and gave ourselves a chance to breathe a little bit, which is exactly what we're looking for at this time of year. It puts us one step closer to going to Pensacola."
Junior defender Madison Haugen quickly put Georgia on the board, depositing a breakaway goal in the second minute for her second score of the season. Haugen's goal was the fastest to open a match for the Bulldogs this season and the swiftest since Dani Murguia's second-minute goal last season against Georgia State.
Haugen nearly added a second goal in the 21st minute, but it was saved by Kentucky keeper Tallulah Miller. The Bulldogs found themselves with a pair of enticing looks in the closing minutes of the first half, yet the score remained 1-0 heading into the locker room.
In the second half, the Bulldogs took advantage of their chances, beginning in the 63rd minute after the Wildcats received a yellow card in the box. Graduate midfielder Abby Boyan converted on the penalty kick for her second goal of the season. Earlier in the match, Boyan set a new program record for career starts with 88th career start for the Bulldogs. Three minutes later, sophomore forward Rebecca Womer celebrated her birthday with her second goal of the season, finishing off assists from Boyan and senior midfielder Mallie McKenzie.
Georgia remains on the road for a matchup at Mississippi State on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Starkville. With a victory, the Bulldogs will put themselves in position to earn a first-round bye at the SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Florida.
