Georgia Closes Home Season with 1-0 Win over Ole Miss

ATHENS, Ga. – A goal by sophomore forward Joyelle Washington to start the second half powered the University of Georgia soccer team past Ole Miss, 1-0, to close the 2022 home slate Thursday evening in front of a crowd of 942 at the Turner Soccer Complex.
Georgia (10-5-1, 4-3-1 SEC) outshot Ole Miss (9-5-2, 3-5 SEC) by an 18-7 margin, with six shots on goal to the Rebels' four. The Bulldogs defense held Ole Miss to only one shot in the first half. Freshman keeper Jordan Brown tallied four saves in 90 minutes. Brown has posted two consecutive shutouts, including the 2-0 win over Missouri last week.
"It started with our defense," Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine said following the match. "I thought was very good to start the game. I thought we played high and played aggressive. We kept them off-balance and that led to better opportunities, winning second balls, and then attacking. I wished we would've finished one or two more, but we were in much better situations that we have been in recent games."
Both teams were scoreless heading into the second half. In the 48th minute, junior forward Tori Penn's blocked shot was deflected to Washington, who sent the ball over the Ole Miss keeper's hands for her fifth career goal to break the stalemate and put the Bulldogs on the board. The Rebels were unable to respond with a goal of their own despite a late push.
Georgia continues SEC play on the road this weekend as it faces Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on SEC Network+.
