Georgia Falls in Series Opener to MSU, 4-2
May 07, 2021 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 22nd-ranked Georgia softball team dropped a 4-2 decision Friday evening to Mississippi State at Nusz Park.Â
Â
Freshman Britton Rogers (1-4) pitched three and a third innings in her start in the circle, allowing four runs on three hits. Graduate Alley Cutting pitched two and two-third innings in relief of scoreless softball for Georgia.Â
Â
Offensively, the Bulldogs scattered five hits to Mississippi State's six. Five different UGA Bulldogs contributed a hit each.Â
Â
Mississippi State (30-22, 6-15) broke though in the bottom of the third, plating two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies, 2-0 MSU.Â
Â
Junior Lacey Fincher led off the top of the fourth with a double to center. She took third on a groundout and came in to score on a two-out single through the right side off the bat of freshman Sydney Chambley to put the Bulldogs on the board, 2-1.Â
Â
A two-run single off the bat of pinch hitter Jackie McKenna widened MSU's lead to 4-1 in the home half of the fourth.Â
Â
With runners on the corners and two out, senior pinch hitter Mackenzie Puckett singled to center to drive in junior Savana Sikes and cut the Mississippi State lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth.Â
Â
That would be the closest Georgia (29-18, 7-15) would get to Mississippi State, falling 4-2 in the opener.Â
Â
The battle of the Bulldogs continues Saturday afternoon from Starkville. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., ET, on SEC Network.Â
