
Georgia Blanks Crimson Tide, Sweeps Season Series

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide Sunday in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-18), to sweep the season series in Tuscaloosa.
Georgia (8-14, 4-7) took Saturday's match in four sets to open the series at Foster Auditorium.
"The team put together a good weekend and played better in the second match which is just as important," said head coach Tom Black. "We have to keep growing and maturing. We saw a lot of intention from the team this weekend to compete at the level we're capable of."
Junior Meghan Froemming tallied a career-best 13 kills in the contest with an efficient .556 hitting clip, also a career best. Junior Kacie Evans also tipped the double-digit kill mark at 10.
Junior Amber Stivrins hit .318 on the outside with eight kills and four service aces. As a team, Georgia tallied nine aces. Freshman Bailey Cox had three in the match.
Defensively, Cox picked up 18 digs. Fellow freshman Clara Brower earned a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Phoebe Awoleye had four blocks while Evans had three.
An early back-and-forth battle saw set one tied at seven. A 5-1 Georgia run opened a bit of a lead for the Bulldogs. Georgia led the Tide 15-9 at the first set media break. Alabama (10-13, 2-9) worked to slow the Bulldogs' offense and cut Georgia's lead to one, 19-18, prompting a timeout. All square at 22-all, Georgia held on to take three-straight and solidify the opening set, 25-22. Evans' 800th-career kill drew set point.
Three service aces from Stivrins aided Georgia in jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead in set two. The Bulldogs used the early advantage to cruise to a 25-17 set two victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. Georgia led by as much as nine in the second stanza.
Georgia used a 5-0 run to open a 7-2 lead and force an early Alabama timeout in the third. Four-straight later broke open a 17-10 advantage for the Bulldogs. The Tide worked to cut Georgia's lead to three, 21-18, but Georgia held on to complete the sweep with a 25-18 set three victory.
Georgia will have a bye week from competition and return to action at No. 5 Kentucky Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Bulldogs and Wildcats will square off on ESPNU live from Lexington.
