Clemson Tops Bulldogs in First-Ever Meeting in Softball, 4-1

ATHENS, Ga. – The 14^th-ranked Georgia softball team fell to Clemson in the first-ever meeting between the two schools Wednesday at Clemson Softball Stadium, 4-1.

Mary Wilson Avant (6-3) pitched four innings in her start in the circle, striking out four and allowing Clemson's four runs, all of which game in the fourth inning. Lauren Mathis pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and fanning four.

Georgia's (15-4) offense was held to three hits, combined for by Sara Mosley, Mahlena O'Neal, and CJ Landrum.

Both teams were retired in order in the first and second innings to begin the game. With one out, Savana Sikes became the first baserunner of the game after being hit by a pitch. Landrum followed with an infield single and both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout to second. Sikes came in to score on a passed ball to put Georgia ahead 1-0 in the third inning.

Clemson (11-7) used six-straight singles in the bottom of the fourth to capture a 4-1 lead on Georgia.

Georgia was held hitless after the fourth inning, putting only one baserunner on via an error in the seventh.

Up next, Georgia hosts the Bulldog Classic at Jack Turner Stadium this weekend, beginning Friday. Georgia will welcome Eastern Illinois, Boston College, and Western Illinois to Athens this weekend.
