September 07, 2019 | Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team brought play to a close at the Long Beach State Tournament Saturday evening, falling to Texas State in straight sets (24-26, 19-25, 19-25).Â
Â
For the second match in a row, junior middle blocker Kianna Young led the charge offensively for the Bulldogs (3-3) with 12 kills. It's only her third double-digit kill match of her career. She hit an impressive .429 in the match.Â
Â
Defensively, Kendall Glover recorded 13 digs while Meghan Donovan fell a dig short of a double-double (9 digs, 37 assists).Â
Â
Texas State (3-4) came out with a strong start that it used to keep the Bulldogs at bay in the opening stanza. Down 19-12, Georgia went on a 4-0 run to narrow the deficit. With the Bobcats holding set point, 24-21, Georgia rattled off three-straight to tie the set; however, an attack error and a Texas State block secured the opening set for the Bobcats, 26-24. Young led Georgia with six kills to begin the match.Â
Â
Once again, Texas State started, going ahead 8-2 to start the second, and rolled to a 25-19 win in the set to capture the 2-0 lead on Georgia. Sage Naves registered five kills in the set.Â
Â
The beginning of the third set remained close until a 4-1 Bobcat run opened an advantage for Texas State, 13-10. Georgia quickly responded with four straight featuring back-to-back kills by Mallory Hernandez and capped by a Kacie Evans ace and putting the Bulldogs in front 15-14. With Georgia up 17-15, the Bobcats won 10 of the next 12 to complete the sweep, 25-19.Â
Â
Georgia is back in action next weekend at the Duke Invitational. The Bulldogs face American and Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 13 to open tournament play.Â

Head coach Tom Black
On lessons learned in the match…Â
"There's a lot to take away. We'll process more as we start to break down the film and look at the numbers; we'll get a plan going for the week. I thought our middles were really efficient and our liberos passed well so those are two positives."
Â
On Kianna Young's excellent performance for the second match in a row…Â
"[Kianna] has been huge for us. Her and Meghan (Donovan) have a really good connection, especially behind and in transition also so that's been helping us a lot."Â
