Bulldogs Defeat Wildcats, Eagles at Day One of Blue Devil Classic

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team opened play the Duke Blue Devil Classic Friday with wins over Northwestern (3-0) and American (3-1) at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Offense was on display Friday as different student-athletes topped double-digit kills, three doing it twice for the Bulldogs (5-3). Freshman Kacie Evans recorded a season-high 15 kills in each match for 30 on the day to lead Georgia. Junior Rachel Ritchie tallied 12 then 16 for 28 total while sophomore Kayla Rivera (14, 10) contributed 24.
Georgia 3, Northwestern 0
The Bulldogs swept the Northwestern Wildcats (5-2) to open play Friday (25-21, 25-17, 25-18). Evansrecorded a season-high 15 kills (.560 hitting percentage) to lead the Georgia offense followed by 12 from Ritchie(.458) and 10 from Rivera(.353).
As a team, Georgia hit a season-best .393. At the service line, the Bulldogs recorded seven aces led by a career-best three from junior BrynnChandler. Defensively, redshirt-sophomore Claire Rothenbergerled the charge with a season-high nine followed by eight from junior Kendall Gloverand seven from Evans. Sophomore Sage Navesalso contributed on three blocks.
Georgia kept the Wildcats at arm's length the entirety of the opening stanza, never trailing. Georgia took the opener 25-21. Rivera led the Georgia offense with five kills while Ritchie and Evans each added four. As a team, the Bulldogs opened the match hitting .412.
The second set was much closer than the first as the frame featured 10 ties and five lead changes. Chandler's career-best third ace put the Bulldogs ahead 16-14 and prompted a timeout from Georgia. After the timeout, a service error put Northwestern within one. The Bulldogs rattled off seven-straight points to open a late 23-15 lead, ultimately resulting in a 25-17 set win and 2-0 lead in the match. Evans added five kills in the set while Georgia totaled five aces. As a team, the Bulldogs hit an impressive .391 in the second to follow up their hot hitting in the first.
A 6-1 run early prompted a Wildcat timeout with the Bulldogs ahead 8-5. Back-to-back points on a block and Evans kill out of the timeout widened the lead to 10-5. A 5-0 run later gave Georgia a 17-10 advantage with their eyes on the finish line. Northwestern was able to pull within three of the lead, but Georgia held strong en route to the 25-18 win and the sweep of the Wildcats. Ritchie and Evans both tallied six kills in the final set, Ritchie doing it on just seven attempts.
Georgia 3, American 1
The Bulldogs concluded opening day of the tournament with a four-set victory over American (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19).
Four Bulldogs saw double figures in the kill column led by 16 from Ritchie and 15 from Evans. Rivera set a new career best with 14 of her own while hitting .444. Junior Kianna Young picked up 10 along the way.
Defensively, Glover recorded a season-high 21 digs, her first 20-dig match of the season. Rothenberger topped the season high she set earlier in the day with 12 in the nightcap. Senior setter Meghan Donovan rounded out her third double-double of the season with 16 digs and 51 assists. On the net, Young also put up a season-best six blocks to lead the team.
A 5-1 run in the middle of the first set helped Georgia open a comfortable lead in the opening set. The Bulldogs rolled to a 25-20 victory in the first frame to find its 1-0 lead. Evans put away six kills in the set.
The second set featured 11 ties and the lead changed hands five times. With American holding set point, 24-20, Georgia pulled within two to force a timeout from the Eagles' (5-4) bench, 24-22. American was able to fend off the Bulldogs to tie the match at a set apiece, 25-22. Rivera added six kills in the set to top the double-digit kill mark for the second time Friday.
A 9-1 scoring run by the Bulldogs in the third opened a nice lead over the Eagles, 19-10. American responded with a 6-1 run of its own to narrow the deficit, 20-16. The Dawgs were able to hold off the advancing Eagles, winning five of the next seven rallies to recapture the 2-1 lead in the match, 25-18. Evans joined Rivera in the double-digit kill club in the set, heading to the fourth with 11.
Georgia never trailed in the fourth set but worked to keep the Eagles at bay. The Bulldogs worked to secure the win in four sets, wrapping up the match with a 25-19 win in set four. Ritchie laid down seven kills in the final frame.
Georgia is back in action at the Blue Devil Classic on Saturday, taking on host Duke at 3 p.m. from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
