Bulldogs Cap Weekend with Sweep of Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team completed a 3-0 weekend at the Blue Devil Classic with a sweep of host Duke Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium (25-11, 25-19, 25-23).
With a perfect 3-0 weekend, Georgia landed three on the all-tournament team including sophomore Kayla Rivera, junior Kianna Young, and senior Meghan Donovan.
Young tallied 13 kills (.571 hitting clip) to lead the squad Saturday followed by 11 from sophomore Mallory Hernandez and 10 from junior Rachel Ritchie.
The Bulldogs (6-3) hit .301 in the match as Donovan dished out 45 assists. Defensively, junior libero Kendall Glover put up 16 digs followed closely by sophomore Claire Rothenberger with 14.
The Bulldogs came out in the opening stanza firing, going up 7-1 on the Blue Devils to start the match. Georgia used the hot stat to roll to a 25-11 first set win over the Blue Devils (5-5). Seven different Bulldogs recorded kills in the set including the first in the career of freshman Meghan Froemming.
Duke rebounded in the second to lead much of the set. The frame included nine ties and the lead changed three times. Despite being down, Georgia remained within striking distance. A string of four-straight kills put the Bulldogs back in front 19-17 en route to a 25-19 win in the second set, capturing the 2-0 lead in the match. Young added five kills while Hernandez contributed four of her own.
The third set started close before an 8-1 Duke run opened a 16-10 lead for the Blue Devils. Duke went on to lead the Bulldogs 22-17; however, Georgia rattled off five-straight points to tie the set at 22. After a Duke timeout, Georgia won the next two rallies to draw match point. A kill by freshman Kacie Evans secured the sweep, 25-23. Young tallied six kills in the final set.
Next up, the Bulldogs open their home schedule this weekend at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia hosts North Carolina State Thursday followed by Georgia Tech on Friday. First serve both evenings is set for 7 p.m.
Admission is free to all regular-season home matches. New this season, the first 30 fans to arrive at Gate A will have the opportunity to sit courtside and enjoy free food.
