Georgia Plays Belmont to Scoreless Draw
September 05, 2019 | Soccer
NASHVILLE --- The University of Georgia soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Belmont on a turf field at E.S. Rose Park on Thursday night.
"I thought there were moments when we played fairly well, we just didn't have the quality we needed in the final third," head coach Billy Lesesne said. "We generated 20 shots, but only put eight on frame and didn't put it away when we had opportunities, which allowed Belmont to stick around. They played really hard. They were up for this game, it was their home opener. They posed problems and we weren't able to break them down. The bottom line is, one of the things we've looked for is to have clean sheets and keep shutouts on the road. We did a nice job, defensively. We just couldn't get the one to go to the back of the net to put us over the top. "
A stellar performance from the Bruins (0-3-1) goalkeeper kept the scoreboard clean throughout the first 45 minutes of play. The Bulldogs (2-2-1) had six shots on goal, but also five offsides calls against them in the first half.
Georgia fired eight more shots in the second half, but could not capitalize on the opportunities. Twelve Bulldogs tallied 20 shots throughout the game and held the Bruins to five total shots.
The Bulldogs pressed well without the ball to keep the Bruins out of the final third. The Bruins' only shot on goal in regulation came in the final minutes, but goalkeeper Liz Brucia made the save to send the game into overtime.
The Bulldogs had five looks in the second overtime, with one shot on goal. Similarly, Georgia held Belmont to one shot on goal in overtime as both teams kept the scoreboard clean to end 110 minutes of play in a scoreless draw.
"We have a really tough challenge, going to Clemson on Sunday," Lesense continued. "I think we learned a lot about ourselves tonight and we have to prepare for the next one."
Next up, the Bulldogs will be on the road to face No. 19 Clemson on Sunday, September 8 at 6 p.m.
