Georgia Battles in Loss to No. 19 Clemson, 2-1
September 08, 2019 | Soccer
CLEMSON, S.C. --- The University of Georgia soccer team fell in a physical battle to No. 19 Clemson, 2-1, at Historic Riggs Field on Sunday evening.
Georgia's lone goal came with nine minutes left on the clock when Chloe Chapman headed the ball to the left side of the net on an assist from fellow freshman Tori Wheeler. Chapman now leads the Bulldogs with three goals on the season.
"It was a pretty competitive game in the first half," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Clemson had a little better of the play, but I thought we created a few chances there. To be down 1-0 at the half, we talked about coming back and starting the second half with a lot of energy. We conceited on a set piece off a corner kick, but we were able to fight back and get one late. We changed the formation and made it exciting for the last ten minutes by putting a little more pressure on them. This is a really good team at Clemson. It's a game that stressed us and we responded really well. We will grow and get better from this. This is the type of game and the type of environment we want to play in. It's what we'll see in the SEC. I'm proud of our response and that we battled until the end."
After Georgia (2-3-1) goalkeeper Emory Wegener made two impressive saves, the Tigers (5-0) were able to score in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs' most promising look in the first half came after freshman Mallie McKenzie forced a corner kick for Georgia. The ball was served in the box and junior Ashley Andersen headed the ball barely over the net.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead three minutes into the second half off of a corner kick opportunity.
After the Bulldogs scored with nine minutes left sophomore Dani Murguia had a chance for the equalizer, but the Tigers goalkeeper secured the win for Clemson in a game where both teams committed fouls in the double digits.
The Bulldogs are back in action at home against Georgia Southern on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. and will head to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Sunday, September 15, also at 7 p.m.
