Georgia Falls to Virginia Tech, 2-0
August 30, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- Despite taking more shots on goal, the University of Georgia soccer team fell to Virginia Tech, 2-0, in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The Hokies (3-0) struck first with a goal in the 35th minute of play and took a two-goal lead after capitalizing on a free kick opportunity with 12 seconds left in the first half.
"That was a tough goal to give up right before halftime," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "We wanted a positive response in the second half. It's hard to chase a game when it's a two-goal difference opposed to a one-goal difference. I thought we got the response we wanted from an exertion and physical standpoint, but we weren't able to get the execution we needed. I did think our execution was at a higher level and there was a bit of urgency in our play. That urgency now becomes our standard heading into our game with Maryland on Sunday."
Junior forward Reagan Glisson had two free kick opportunities saved by the Virginia Tech goalkeeper in the first 45 minutes of action.
Georgia (1-2) took 10 total shots, with five on target, compared to the Hokies' seven. The Hokies and Bulldogs committed 10 and 11 fouls, respectively.
The Bulldog Classic continues on Sunday when Georgia takes on Maryland at noon. Auburn and Virginia Tech face off at 2:30 to conclude the weekend's slate at the Turner Soccer Complex.
Earlier this evening, Auburn defeated Maryland, 4-0.
