Bulldogs Aim For Third Straight 11-Win Regular Season
Since a 12th game was added to the college football season in 2002, Georgia has gone 11-1 during the regular season four times: 2002, 2012, 2017 and 2018. In school history, there have been 11 teams that have won at least 11 games in a season. 1942 - 11-1; 1946 - 11-0; 1971 - 11-1; 1980 - 12-0; 1982 - 11-1; 2002 – 13-1; 2003 - 11-3; 2007 - 11-2; 2012 - 12-2; 2017 - 13-2; 2018: 11-3.
Â
Rivalry Rumblings
Georgia leads the series 67-39-5 and doesn't count two Georgia Tech wins during WWII (1943-44) when the Yellow Jackets utilized players from a naval officer's training program hosted on campus. The Bulldogs have won the past nine meetings in Atlanta dating back to 2001.
Since 1995, the winner of the Georgia-Georgia Tech game has been awarded the Governor's Cup Trophy. Since then, the Bulldogs are 18-6 in that stretch.
The Georgia-Georgia Tech series is one of the nation's oldest. There are only 13 other FBS rivalries that have been played more with Minnesota-Wisconsin at the top with 128 games and Georgia-Auburn tied for second now with 124. UM meets UW Saturday in Minneapolis, and the series is tied 60-60-8.
From 1917-24, Georgia and Georgia Tech did not play each other because of a dispute caused by a Georgia parade float that ridiculed the Yellow Jackets for playing football during World War I.
Georgia Tech's 51-48 win in overtime in 1999 in Atlanta on ABC was the highest-scoring game in the series and featured 1,102 total yards of offense. In overtime, Georgia blocked the Yellow Jackets' first field goal attempt on third down and the Jackets recovered it. Then, Luke Manget kicked a 38-yarder on the mulligan for the win.
In 1978, Georgia trailed 20-0 in the second quarter when freshman Buck Belue came off the sideline and rallied the team to a 29-28 victory, the biggest comeback in school history to that point.
Georgia closed out the 2002 regular season in Athens with a 51-7 thrashing of Georgia Tech on CBS. It was the most points ever for a Bulldog squad against the Yellow Jackets.
Â
Stingy Defense
Georgia leads the SEC in Scoring Defense at 10.7 points/game (No. 2 nationally), Rushing Defense at 68.5 yds/g (No. 2 nationally) and in Total Defense at 267.8 yds/g (No. 5 nationally). The Bulldogs have allowed just 118 points in 2019. The school record for lowest points allowed in at least a 12-game season is 198 in 2004 (12 games/16.5 avg.). The school record for the lowest average points allowed in at least a 12-game season is 14.5 in 2003 (14 games/203 pts.).
UGA was the first FBS team in at least the past 20 years to not allow a rushing touchdown through its first nine games. At No. 12 Auburn, the Tigers ended the streak in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs only allowed a single passing touchdown last week during the win over No. 24 Texas A&M.
Â
A Look At The Senior Class
The 2019 seniors enter Saturday's contest with a 42-11 record, three SEC Eastern Division crowns and one SEC title (2017). The most wins by a senior class belongs to the 2005 group that went 44-9 and claimed a pair of SEC titles (2002, 2005). Georgia's most decorated senior class came in 1983 as they went 43-4-1, winning the 1980 National Championship and three SEC titles (1980-82). Last year's senior class concluded their career with a 42-13 record, which ranks tied for third best in school history (2004 seniors also went 42-10).

Smart officially came home to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. But he still had unfinished business at Alabama, which was chasing a national title. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016, when the Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was at work in Athens.

Pound The Rock
For the second straight year, junior D'Andre Swift has gone over a 1,000 yards for the season. He eclipsed the mark in the second quarter at #12 AU on a 26-yard run. Swift is the fifth Bulldog in history to have a pair of 1,000-yard seasons and the first since Nick Chubb did it three times (2014, '16-17). He has registered more than 100 yards in the last two games (nine in his career) and ranks seventh in Bulldog history with 2,797 career rushing yards.
A 2019 Maxwell Award semifinalist, Swift has 1,130 yards on 183 carries (6.2 per carry) along with seven touchdowns.
Swift earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors after carrying the ball 21 times for 179 yards (8.5 avg.) in the win over UK. This was the highest output for Swift since he piled up a careerhigh 186 on 17 carries during the win over #24 Auburn last year.
Along with Swift, Georgia's tailbacks who have shared the load include Sr. Brian Herrien, So. James Cook and RFr. Zamir White. Five different Bulldog tailbacks have scored this season.
Herrien shined versus #6 UF in the receiving game with career highs of four for 46 yards. He had a one-handed grab on third down that led to a field goal in the third quarter. Against #12 AU, Herrien had his second career TD catch (first of 2019) to put the Bulldogs up 14-0.
Â
A Look At The Line
Georgia's starting offensive line, which is a 2019 Joe Moore Award semifinalist, averages 6 feet, 5 inches and 328.6 pounds, making it the biggest unit in Bulldog history.
Georgia is ranked second nationally giving up only eight sacks this year.
The Bulldogs are fifth in the SEC at 198.5 rushing yards/ game.
The Bulldogs returned four of five starters, including All- American LT Andrew Thomas and Freshman All-American RT Isaiah Wilson and Cade Mays, who lined up at OG and OT last season and has continued that trend in 2019. The trio is also joined by junior guards Solomon Kindley and Ben Cleveland and sophomore C Trey Hill, who all had starts in 2018.
Thomas was recently named a Midseason All-American and an Outland Trophy semifinalist and is a two-time SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week this year.
Mays has now played every spot on the line in 2019, including C against Missouri after Hill went down with an ankle injury.
Â
Top Targets
UGA's leading receivers are graduate transfer Lawrence Cager (33 rec., 476 yds., 4 TDs), freshman George Pickens (32 rec., 457 yds., 5 TDs) and junior Demetris Robertson (24 rec., 259 yds., 3 TDs).
Cager, who completed his undergraduate degree at Miami (Fla.), has been limited the past three games because of an injury. He did not play versus #24 Texas A&M, while at #12 AU and versus Missouri, he saw action only in the first half.
Cager had career highs with seven catches for 132 yards and a score (52-yd TD) during the win over #6 UF. Three of his catches were third down conversions and five of them went for first downs.
Pickens stepped up versus Missouri with five catches for 67 yards and a career high two touchdowns.
Freshman Dominick Blaylock (15 rec., 270 yds., 4 TDs) has also shined this season, leading the group with an 18.0 per catch average. Blaylock had his first career 100-yard game in the win over Arkansas State (4 rec., 112 yds., 1 TD) and caught his third career TD against the Gators. In the win over #12 AU, he started the scoring with a 51-yard touchdown catch. He is also serving as the team's punt returner of late, returning four for 34 against Missouri.
The Bulldogs also have a pair of veteran tight ends in senior Charlie Woerner and graduate transfer Eli Wolf (Tennessee). Wolf has 12 catches for 147 yards this season and one touchdown while Woerner has seven for 42 yards.
Â
Defense Leading The Way
Georgia is one of only three FBS teams (Clemson, Ohio State) to not allow more than 21 points in a game this year.
Georgia leads the SEC in Scoring Defense at 10.7 points/ game (tied No. 2 nationally), Rushing Defense at 68.5 yds/g (No. 2 nationally) and in Total Defense at 267.8 yds/g (No. 5 nationally).
The Bulldogs have allowed just 118 points in 2019 including only 84 in SEC action (10.5 points/game).
The Bulldogs held #12 AU scoreless through the first three quarters. The Tigers ended up running 86 plays for the game, which is the most ever by an opponent in the Kirby Smart era.
UGA has allowed just one rushing touchdown. Georgia ranks fourth in the nation in Red Zone Defense (68.4%).
The defense has posted 28 scoreless quarters, including shutouts against Arkansas State (55-0), Kentucky (21-0) and Missouri (27-0). The school record for fewest average points allowed in a 12+ game season is 14.5 in 2003. This year, Georgia is allowing just 10.7. The fewest points allowed in a 12+ game season is 198 in 2004. This year the Bulldogs have given up just 118.
In its last nine games, Georgia has surrendered just 48 points in the second half, which includes 14 from #6 UF and 14 from #12 AU in their respective fourth quarters. The Bulldogs have outscored opponents in the second half 147-58, including 84- 42 in the fourth quarter.
Georgia held #24 Texas A&M to minus one yard rushing, the lowest by a Bulldog opponent since 2011 (UF had minus-19). The Aggies averaged 434.3 yards of total offense a game and managed 274 against Georgia.
The Bulldogs blanked Missouri by holding the Tigers to 198 total yards, including just 50 on 24 carries.
Georgia held the #6 Gators to 21 yards rushing on 19 carries and just 278 total yards during a 24-17 win. UF came in averaging more than 400 yards/game on offense.
Georgia was trailing #7 Notre Dame 10-7 at the half (the touchdown allowed was on a five-play, 8-yard drive following a turnover) and held the Irish scoreless in the third quarter and just a touchdown in the final period in the 23-17 win.
Â
Up Front
The personnel up front this season includes primarily Jordan Davis, Michael Barnett, Tyler Clark, Malik Herring and Devonte Wyatt.
Freshman Travon Walker extinguished #12 AU's last hope with a sack in the fourth quarter.
Clark finished with three tackles, including a tackle for loss on a 3rd-and-goal from the 2 yard line in double overtime, versus USC while Barnett led all interior linemen with five stops.
Georgia held #7 Notre Dame (46), #6 Florida (21) and #24 Texas A&M (minus-1) to a combined total of 66 yards rushing.
Â
Reed Leading Defensive Backfield
Graduate J.R. Reed and Jr. Richard LeCounte are starting at the safety spots along with RSo. Eric Stokes and Jr. DJ Daniel on the corners. Jr. Mark Webb and RFr. Governor's Cup Began With Bullpups vs. Baby Jackets
For 60 years, Thanksgiving Day was a special day in the history of the Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry. It was on that day that the Georgia and Georgia Tech freshmen football teams, and in later years the junior varsity teams, met at Tech's Grant Field for the Governor's Cup. The game, played from 1933 to '93, annually benefited the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital and became a nationally- recognized event. However, scholar- ship and roster limitations caused discontinuation of the game in 1993. But in 1994, a "Legends Game" was held to maintain the tradition of the game.
The NCAA, at the schools' request, agreed to recognize the varsity rivalry and beginning in 1995, the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta annually presents the Governor's Cup to the winning team. Additionally, for the seniors playing in their last regular season game, they receive watches, and the seniors on the winning team get a personalized replica of the Governor's Cup. In some years, the Governor of Georgia has been on hand to present the Cup to the winning team at the end of the game too.
