Bulldogs Down Ole Miss in Four Sets Wednesday

October 24, 2019 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team defeated the Ole Miss Rebels Wednesday night in four sets (25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15) lengthening its winning streak to six matches.

The last time Georgia won six Southeastern Conference matches in a row was 2008.

The Bulldogs (15-4, 7-1) were led offensively by freshman Kacie Evans, tallying a season-best 20 kills, the first 20-kill performance of her career. Along with 10 digs, it was Evans' fifth double-double of the season.

At the service line, Brynn Chandler registered a career-high seven service aces. That figure ranks second all-time for aces in a four-set match. She also tallied a career-best 12 digs. As a team, Georgia registered 12 aces altogether as junior Kendall Glover added three, tying a season high. Defensively, Glover picked up 23 digs.

Along with Evans, two other Bulldogs topped the double-digit kill mark including juniors Rachel Ritchie (13) and Kianna Young (12).

Senior setter Meghan Donovan also tallied a double-double, handing out 48 assists and putting up 18 digs, tying a season high.

Georgia used an early 4-0 run to open a lead on the Rebels in set one, 6-4. The Bulldogs kept the Rebels at arm's length in the set to take the frame 25-20 and a 1-0 lead in the match. Chandler put a bow on the first set with back-to-back aces. Evans recorded six kills to begin the match.

Trailing 10-7 in the second set, Georgia went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead, highlighted by two aces from Glover. Ole Miss (14-5, 6-2) fought back to tie the set 22 all and earned two points to draw set point. The Bulldogs worked again to retie the set at 24 but Ole Miss won the frame 27-25 to tie the match at a set apiece.

The Bulldogs fought back from an 18-10 deficit with a 9-1 run to tie the third set at 19 all. Georgia was able to halt the Ole Miss offense in the third to steal the set 25-22.

Georgia never trailed in the fourth set after coming out early 3-0. Ahead 19-13, the Bulldogs wrapped up the match on a 6-2 run, winning the fourth set 25-15 and the match in four.

Next up, the Bulldogs travel to Texas A&M for a showdown with the Aggies Sunday at 3 p.m. from College Station.

Georgia Head Coach Tom Black
On being in first place in the SEC...
"Big picture, it means we're doing okay, we're halfway through. For the program, it's really cool and a nice benchmark. Everything else you got to put in perspective because there's a ton of season left."

On Brynn Chandler's career-high seven aces...
"I think she's a stud back there. I think she's going to have longer serving runs before the season is out. When her serve is on, it's almost unpassable, so she can really dominate back there."
