Georgia Takes on Tobacco Road Doubleheader

October 24, 2019 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia swimming and diving returns to the water this weekend for consecutive dual meets at North Carolina and Duke. Georgia will take on UNC on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, followed by a matchup with Duke on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Taishoff Aquatics Center in Durham.

Georgia (1-0, 1-0) appeared in both sides of this week's CSCAA dual meet poll, with the women ranked 12th and the men slotted 14th. As for this week's opponents, the Duke women are ranked 17th, while the Blue Devil men and Tar Heel women both received votes.

For the Georgia men, this will be the 34th all-time meeting with North Carolina, with the Bulldogs holding a 21-12 advantage in the series, while the Lady Bulldogs have only lost once in 25 previous meetings. In the most recent dual between the schools, both Georgia squads prevailed (Men: 187-113 / Women: 180-120) on Oct. 6, 2017 in Athens. Meanwhile, Saturday's meet will be just the second-ever matchup between the Bulldogs and Blue Devils, with Georgia taking both duals in 1981.

Georgia will be looking to follow up its season-opening sweep at Alabama three weeks ago. In the women's meet, the Lady Bulldogs rode an opening medley relay victory to a comfortable 163.5-136.5 result, adding eight individual wins in the process. Junior Courtney Harnish posted 19.5 points as she took first in the 200 and 500 freestyle, in route to a SEC Women's Swimmer of the Week honor.

SEC Freshman of the Week Zoie Hartman made an impressive debut with a breaststroke sweep, posting B-cut times in each race. Additionally, sophomore Dakota Luther won the 200 butterfly and finished second in the 100, while senior Veronica Burchill claimed first in the 100 freestyle. On the 3-meter springboard, sophomore Ellie Crump earned her first college victory, placing first with a NCAA-qualifying mark of 283.05.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs used a top-four sweep of the 400 IM to clinch a 157-143 win over the Crimson Tide. Junior Camden Murphy earned SEC Swimmer of the Week plaudits as he swept the butterfly events, while senior Walker Higgins took first in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Freshman Ian Grum's win in the 200 backstroke, along with a close second-place in the 100, helped him win SEC Freshman of the Week. Juniors Greg Reed (1000 freestyle) and Jack Dalmolin (200 breaststroke) joined sophomore Andrew Abruzzo (400 IM) in victory for the Dawgs.

North Carolina will also enter Friday's meet on a three-week layoff, following a sweep (Men: 157-143 / Women: 170-115) of East Carolina on Oct. 4. The Tar Heel men took five individual events (50 free, 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 3-meter), in addition to both relays. The women's squad won the opening medley relay on their way to 12 individual victories against the Pirates. UNC is led by first-year head coach Mark Gangloff, who swam collegiately at Auburn and spent the last seven years as an assistant at Missouri.

In its opening meet on Oct. 12, Duke split with Florida State in Tallahassee, with the women winning, 177-123, and the men narrowly falling, 153-147. The Duke women earned 11 individual wins along with first place in the medley relay, including two swimmers with three victories each. The men were leading the Seminoles entering the 400 freestyle relay, but a FSU win helped them pull ahead at the end. Head coach Dan Colella enters his 15th season at the helm and holds plenty of experience against the Lady Bulldogs with 12 prior seasons in charge at Tennessee.

Following this weekend's action, Georgia will head south next week for a matchup against rival Florida. The meet will open with diving on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m., followed by the full meet on Friday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville.
