ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs (35-9, 8-5) fell to the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers (32-10, 11-5) in a 5-2 decision that was decided in the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea Wilkinson (20-3) suffered the loss, as she pitched seven innings and gave up eight hits, two of which being home runs. The senior struck out seven while walking four.
Cortni Emanuel and Alex Hugo led the Georgia bats, as C. Emanuel notched two hits while Hugo finished with two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Matty Moss (9-2) recorded the win. Moss entered the game as relief for Rainey Gaffin in the first inning and pitched 6.1 scoreless frames while only giving up three hits. Gaffin allowed the two runs after giving up two hits and three walks.
Tennessee took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the opener after a solo home run from Meghan Gregg and a RBI double from Megan Geer. However, Georgia answered right back after Hugo connected with a double down the third base line, scoring Sydni Emanuel and Maeve McGuire to make it a 2-2 ball game.
The offenses stayed quiet for the rest of the game until the seventh inning when Tennessee's Geer, who went 2-for-4 on the day, sent one soaring over the left field fence for a three-run homer. The home run put Tennessee on top 5-2 and secured the win for the Volunteers.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday as they will host Tennessee in game two of the series at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted on the SEC Network while the first 500 fans at the game will receive a free Megan Wiggins bobblehead.
