Georgia Drops Series Opener to Mizzou 5-2

ATHENS, Ga. -- No. 9/8 Georgia dropped a 5-4 decision to the No. 21/21 Missouri Tigers in the series opener on Friday, April 3 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga. With the loss, Georgia falls to 29-10 on the year and 6-7 in Southeastern Conference play. Missouri improves to 24-7 and 6-4 in SEC action.

Chelsea Wilkinson (17-6) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in the complete game performance. She also struck out five. Tori Finucane (12-6) earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks in 4.0 innings of work. Paige Lowary threw the final three innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

The Bulldogs got ahead early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A walk, a single and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Georgia. With two away, a passed ball allowed Sydni Emanuel to try for home. She beat the tag at the plate to put Georgia up 1-0.

Mizzou answered with two run runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1on a solo home run to left. The second run crossed the plate on a throwing error.

Alex Hugo tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run that curved fair around the left field foul pole. Anna Swafford followed with a double, but the Bulldogs were unable to scratch another run across in the inning.

The Tigers retook the lead at 4-2 in the top of the fifth on a two run home run by Sami Fagan.

Missouri added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Fagan that brought the score to 5-2.

The Bulldogs got a runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't push a run across.

The series between Georgia and Missouri continues tomorrow, April 4 at 2 p.m. The game will available on the SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN app.
