BISHOP, Ga. - The No. 6 Georgia equestrian team defeated No. 4 Auburn 13-6 Friday afternoon at the UGA Equestrian Complex in Bishop, Ga. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 2-2 on the season including a perfect 2-0 record in the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers move to 2-2 with a 1-2 mark in conference play.
"I'm proud of the team today," said head coach Meghan Boenig. "Any time you ride against an SEC school it's going to be tough. Auburn came with their A-game today and we were able to maintain our focus and come out with the win. This is going to give us the momentum we need as we prepare to travel to Texas A&M next week."
Highlighting the meet were Bailey Anderson (Horsemanship), Meg O'Mara (Equitation Over Fences) and Leylan Gleeson who earned MVP honors.
Georgia took a 3-2 lead in Equitation Over Fences. Auburn's Elizabeth Benson picked up the first point of the event before O'Mara edged Megan Bifano 84-83 and was awarded MVP honors. Liza Finsness used a score of 84 to top Demi Stiegler's 77. Auburn's Ashley Foster knotted the score 2-2 with a 82-74 victory. Leylan Gleeson put the third point on the board for Georgia with an 81-70 win over Peyton Smith.
The Bulldog's Horsemanship squad downed the Tigers 4-1. Heather Schmidt outscored Danielle Long 71.5-69. Paige Stawicki rode to a 74-73 victory over Hannah Stephens. Anderson put the third-straight point on the board for Georgia, defeating Katie Buff 74.5-73 and was awarded MVP. Griffin Knight then earned the lone point for Auburn. Rachel Kolb scored an event-high 75 to defeat Hannah Loseke's 73. At the half, the Bulldogs led the Tigers 7-3.
Georgia carried its momentum into Equitation on the Flat, defeating Auburn 4-1. Arbuckle led things off with a 75-73 win over Tory Hoft. Finsness followed suit, outscoring Benson 76-67. Ashley Foster picked up the lone point for the Tigers. O'Mara used an 82 to take her point over Stiegler's 63. In the anchor position for Georgia, Gleeson sealed the event with an MVP-earning 77-72 victory over Jennifer Delman.
Claudia Spreng earned a point with a 68-66 victory over Alexa Rivard for the opening point of Reining. Auburn took the next two points with wins from Knight and Hailey Munger. Lauren Garmon then rode to a 67.5-point draw with Katsy Leeman. Lauren Tieche tied the score with a 67-62.5 win over Julianna Cook, leaving the score of Reining 2-2.
The Georgia equestrian team will be back in action next Saturday, November 22 when it travels to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M.
