Track & Field’s Matias Reynaga Shatters 5K School Record at Wake Forest Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. / WINSTON SALEM, N.C.— Georgia Track and Field concludes the final day at Wake Forest Invite with a school record and a handful of impressive performances. Bulldogs collect two event wins to start day one of the Tom Jones Memorial on Friday afternoon.

  • Freshman Celeste Robinson opened up competition for the Bulldogs with an event win in the collegiate second of the women's 200 meter dash after a 23.21 finish at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial.
  • Senior Brion Stephens kept the momentum going in the high jump securing the event win after clearing 2.18m/7-1.75, which is tied for No.5 in the current NCAA rankings.  
  • Meanwhile in Winston-Salem, the Georgia distance squad wrapped two days of impressive performances. The success began late Thursday night with graduate transfer Will Aitken in the 3000m steeple chase. Aitken clocked an 8:59.93 finish, which ranks No. 9 in program history. Fellow graduate transfer, Yasna Petrova followed up that performance with a 34:54.16 in the women's 10K, which ranks No. 10 in program history.
  • Earlier tonight at the Wake Forest Invite, freshman Anastasia Nilsson kicked off day two with a 4:21.83 finish in the women's 1500m, which ranks No. 10 in UGA history.
  • The highlight of the meet came in the men's 5000m, where graduate transfer Matias Reynaga shattered the Georgia school record with a time of 13:32.16 while securing the event win. Reynaga led a deep Bulldogs distance group that placed four runners among the program's all-time top 10, including Oliver Smart (13:45.46, No. 4), Ryan Olree (13:47.77, No. 6), and Conner Rutherford (14:00.89, No. 10).

Competition resumes with Lisa Raye and Ava Kitchings in the women's 100m dash (collegiate) at 9:45 a.m. Men's events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the 110m hurdles invitational preliminaries featuring Le'Ezra Brown and Jayden Keys.
