ATHENS, GA.-----Ninth-ranked Georgia's season-opening 12-game homestand continues Wednesday when USC Upstate visits Foley Field. First pitch will be at 3:02 p.m. and be available on SECN+ and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
Hitters To Watch
Junior third baseman Tre Phelps (.300-2-4) and junior catcher/outfielder Daniel Jackson (.273-2-5) blasted a pair of home runs in the Wright State series and were among four Bulldogs who tallied a team-best three hits. Senior INF/OF Ryan Black (.600-0-0) and sophomore CF/LHP Kenny Ishikawa (.600-0-2) also had three hits. Phelps extended his hitting streak to 17 games dating to last season while Jackson threw out four would-be base stealers. Ishikawa started game two of the series on the mound and earned a win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Ishikawa was named to Baseball America's National Team of the Week as a two-way player.
Meanwhile, Bulldog senior shortstop Kolby Branch scorched the baseball but finished just 2-for-11. He hit five balls over 100 miles per hour and only one resulted in a hit as Wright State defenders were in the right place at the right time. Overall, Georgia batted .276 with seven home runs and a .449 on base percentage. The Bulldogs drew 20 walks, were hit nine times and struck out 21 times. WSU turned four double plays.
Georgia Pitching Plans
Georgia will start junior RHP Zach Brown who is in his second season with the Bulldogs as part of a staff outing. Brown went 3-1 with a 7.45 ERA in 10 appearances including one start last year. In his career, he is 7-1 with a 5.23 ERA in 35 appearances. A 6-5, 230-pound native of Santa Ana, Calif., he began his career at Ohio State where he made 25 relief appearances as a freshman in 2024.
In the Wright State series, the Bulldog pitching staff combined for a 2.52 ERA with 45 strikeouts and just seven walks in 25 innings. The Bulldogs held the Raiders to a .186 batting average.
About USC Upstate
The Spartans, members of the Big South Conference, opened the season at South Alabama and went 1-2. After falling 16-7 in the first game, the Spartans bounced back for a 10-7 win despite a furious four-run rally by the Jaguars in the ninth. USA claimed game three 7-3 to take the series.
On Tuesday, USC Upstate plays host to Western Carolina. Currently, the Spartans are batting .297 with a .360 slugging percentage and .423 on-base percentage. They have a 10.08 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 19 walks in 25 innings. Opponents are hitting .298 against them.
Five Spartans were named preseason All-Big South Conference including fifth year designated hitter Johnny Sweeney who also earned a spot on the NCBWA 2nd Team Preseason All-America team. Last year, Sweeney hit .345-18-82. Upstate captured the 2025 Big South regular season and tournament championship. They went 0-2 at the NCAA Clemson Regional and finished 36-25.
