Georgia Shuts Out Vanderbilt for First SEC Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Powered by Summer Denigan's first-half goal and nine saves from Jordan Brown, the University of Georgia soccer team (5-3-2, 1-1-0 SEC) earned its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season in a 1-0 shutout over Vanderbilt (5-1-3, 0-1-1 SEC) before 427 spectators Sunday at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

  • With the win, Georgia has now defeated Vanderbilt in consecutive matchups for the first time since the 2014 and 2015 seasons. It was also Georgia's first victory in Nashville since the 2015 meeting.
  • Denigan provided the lone scoring in the 17th minute with her fifth goal of the season, expertly depositing junior teammate Cate Hardin's first assist of the season. Denigan is now tied for 10th in program history with six game-winning goals and has scored in consecutive contests.
  • Facing consistent pressure from the Commodore attack, Brown tallied nine saves, her second-most of the season, as she posted her 16th career shutout. Vanderbilt outshout Georgia, 18-10, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on frame, while also earning 12 corner kicks, a season-high allowed by the Bulldogs.
  • With the heat index in Nashville surpassing 100 degrees, Georgia used 23 players in Sunday's match, matching the total played in the Kennesaw State match on Aug. 25.
  • Denigan led all Bulldogs with four shots and two on frame, while graduate midfielder Dasia Torbert pitched in with three shots. Along with Brown, team captains Ellie Gilbert and Nicole Vernis played a full 90 minutes.
