Georgia Falls to Colorado, 3-2, in NCAA First Round

November 15, 2024 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. – Despite two goals and a lead at the break, the Georgia soccer team's (8-7-6) season came to a close after falling 3-2 against Colorado (12-4-5) in the NCAA Tournament first round before 600 spectators at the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday.

Fast Facts
  • The Buffaloes opened the scoring in the 24th minute, taking a 1-0 lead off a penalty shot scored by Ava Priest.
  • The Bulldogs wasted no time getting back in the mix as graduate forward Hannah White's cross from the right side met graduate forward Margie Detrizio in the box for a 30th-minute goal, marking her ninth of the season to level the match at 1-1.
  • Georgia found the back of the net six minutes later as White scored on a counter, tallying her fourth goal of the season on an assist from senior midfielder Aly Akers to take a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
  • Colorado scored twice in the second half to take the lead at 3-2, with unassisted goals by Hope Leyba and Shyra James coming in the 55th and 63rd minutes, respectively.
  • The Bulldogs created several chances to level the match, with Detrizio and junior defender Maddie Baker cracking shots off the crossbar and post late in the second half.

Post-Match Quotes
Head Coach Keidane McAlpine
On the result...
"This one's going to sting awhile. This one is going to sting for a long time. I thought for the first half we played pretty well. Unfortunate PK, but I thought we got our feels back in the game. And then in the second half, I thought that we didn't play with the same composure and intensity as we did in the first half. Ultimately, we gifted them the final goal, and then we couldn't find one. We had plenty of chances. Their keeper made plenty of good saves, and there were some near misses. We hit the post and all the things. This one is going to be a tough one. Obviously, Colorado is a good team, and they stuck with it and did what they were supposed to do. This one - I really feel for our seniors. They gave it everything, and this was their last time to play here. I hate that it ended that way."
