ATHENS, Ga. – Three first-half goals boosted the 22nd-ranked University of Georgia soccer team past Southern Miss., 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex before 1,050 spectators.
Graduate forward Hannah White led the Georgia (2-1-1) offense with a pair of goals. Graduate midfielder Mallie McKenzie and freshman midfielder Christian Brathwaite both recorded one goal.
"We needed the goals," Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine said following the match. "And today, to get the goals, to get some people moving forward, to get our attacking players a lot of reps in the attacking third, was good. Overall, I didn't think we were up to the standard that we want in terms of how we want to play. But you know what, when you need wins, you need wins. When you need goals, you need goals. We'll take it."
The Bulldogs were on the board early in the eighth minute as a pass from Brathwaite found senior defender Madison Haugen at the edge of the keeper's box. Haugen connected with McKenzie, who sent the ball to the top of the net for her first goal of the season.
White followed suit in the 25th minute as she navigated around four defenders to score her second goal of the season. White struck again in the 39th minute from the top of the box to boost Georgia's lead over Southern Miss (2-3-0) to 3-0, setting a new career high with the brace. Junior midfielder Aly Akers tallied assists on both of White's goals, the first two of her collegiate career.
"I felt a lot better than Thursday," White said. "It was nice to get in the back of the net especially after Thursday was just a rough one. Having three breakaways and not being able to finish, it was just really relieving to finally finish them and get a win."
In the 50th minute, Brathwaite took possession at the top of the box and danced her way around the defenders to slot Georgia four in front with the first goal of her Bulldog career.
The Bulldog defense limited the Golden Eagles to just six shots, controlling possession for the majority of the match. Bulldog goalkeepers Jordan Brown and Kenzie Solomon each tallied one save to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
Georgia will travel to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
