
Bulldogs Defeat Chanticleers to Close CCU Tournament, 3-1

CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Georgia volleyball team beat the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in four sets to close play at the Coastal Carolina Tournament Saturday afternoon (16-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-22).
The Bulldogs conclude the weekend 2-1 in Conway and climb to 4-2 on the season.
Kacie Evans (18) and Sophie Fischer (17) led the offense for Georgia. Both performed stellar all around with Evans tallying eight digs and Fischer putting up seven blocks. The two also combined for three service aces.
Setter Clara Brower handed out 41 assists, put up eight digs and three blocks, while recording two kills and an ace Saturday.
Libero Mallory Downing recorded 14 digs while Bailey Cox added 10 of her own. Cox was responsible for a third of Georgia's nine total aces, recording three in the contest, tying a career best.
The Bulldogs and Chanticleers (2-4) went point-for-point to begin the match. Knotted at 10, CCU put together four-straight points to open 14-10 lead. Coastal Carolina continued to build on the lead, reaching the five-point mark and forcing Georgia's second timeout, 19-14. CCU finished the set on a 4-0 run, taking the opener 25-16. Evans recorded six kills in the set.
Knotted at 3-all in the second, Georgia strung together five-straight points including kills from Evans and Fischer, a block, and a Cox ace, to go ahead 8-3 and prompt an early Chanticleer timeout. CCU worked to cut the lead to 14-12 then Cox used a 5-0 run with a pair of aces to go up 19-12 and exhaust Coastal's timeouts in the frame. The Dogs kept the foot on the gas, rolling to a 25-16 set two win, capped by a Brower ace, Georgia's fifth ace in the set.
All square at nine in the third, Georgia won six of the next seven points to go up 15-10 heading in to the third set media timeout, capped by a pair of Bulldog blocks. Back-to-back kills from Krista Blakely and Kaitlin Fournier widened the lead to seven, forcing a CCU timeout, 20-13. The Bulldogs finished the set winning seven-of-nine rallies to win the set by 10, 25-15, and take the 2-1 lead in the match. The Georgia block came alive in the set, putting up four against the Chanticleers.
