DULUTH, Ga. — Seniors Vanessa Deniz and Soraya Hawthorne earned event titles as the No. 18 Georgia gymnastics team fell to No. 2 Michigan, 197.825-196.900, at the Gas South Arena on Friday evening.
Deniz tied her career high of 9.925 on beam, while Soraya Hawthorne tied with four Michigan (14-2, 8-1 Big 10) athletes for the event title on the floor with a 9.925.
Prior to the meet, Georgia (6-11, 1-6 SEC) honored its seven seniors in their final regular season meet.
"I could talk endlessly about this senior class," said head coach Courtney Kupets-Carter. "We have seven of them and they have absolutely turned things around just within the team, how they feel about gymnastics and where this program is going. I truly believe that this group has just made it enjoyable to coach in the gym - they enjoy each other. We had a long celebration for them in the locker room before we came out just to honor them and tell them those things. There are times in life where you appreciate people and you don't hear it all that often, so we made sure to tell our seniors today how much we appreciate them."
Beginning on vault, Georgia posted a total of 49.300, its second-highest performance in the event of the season. The rotation was led by senior Amanda Cashman, who earned a career-best 9.900. Four other GymDogs scored a 9.850: Hawthorne, Naya Howard, Josie Angeny and Katie Finnegan.
The GymDogs then moved to bars, where a trio of athletes – Howard, JaFree Scott and Haley de Jong – posted a 9.850. Angeny and Finnegan tallied a 9.800, giving the GymDogs a bars score of 49.150.
Transitioning into the third rotation, the GymDogs scored just above their season average on beam, scoring 49.100 on the event. Deniz led the rotation, tying her career high with a score of 9.925 and claiming the second beam event title of her career. De Jong anchored a 9.850, while Angeny and Hawthorne notched a 9.825 and 9.775, respectively.
The GymDogs concluded its final regular season meet on floor, where it scored 49.350. Hawthorne led the rotation with a 9.925, marking the fifth time in the last six meets her score surpassed 9.925 in the event. Cashman earned a 9.900, marking the sixth time this season she scored a 9.900 or better. De Jong tallied a 9.875 and Eryn Williams tied her career-best 9.850 for the second consecutive meet and the fourth time this season.
De Jong finished with an all-around score of 39.400, her second-best total of the season, while Howard concluded the regular season with a 39.225 all-around.
Georgia heads to the Southeastern Conference Championship on Saturday, March 18, starting at 3:30 p.m. ET inside Gas South Arena. The GymDogs will then await its draw for NCAA Regionals, slated to begin on March 30.
