Georgia Finish SEC Championship with 196.600

DULUTH, Ga. --- The University of Georgia gymnastics team scored a 196.600 in the afternoon session of the Southeastern Conference Championship with Auburn, Arkansas and Missouri at Gas South Arena.

Georgia was the fourth-place finisher of the session behind Arkansas (196.825), Missouri (197.000) and Auburn (197.100).

"The team had a great mentality in warmups and a good mindset coming into competition. For the most part, they really executed what we had asked them to. Just had a few small mistakes on the floor that really took our team total down," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. "This was fantastic preparation for regionals. We won warmups today and now we just got to make sure we transition that under the pressure. They got a good experience doing that tonight. Starting on floor with all that energy is difficult and ending on balance beam under the circumstances, they had quality balance beam, really thought about the details and that is what is going to be really important in a post season meet like regionals in two weeks."

The GymDogs began competition on floor scoring a team total of 49.025. Seniors Soraya Hawthorne and Haley de Jong anchored for the Bulldogs each with high scores of the meet (9.900).

Continuing on vault, three GymDogs flipped to scores above 9.80. Freshman Naya Howard and Senior Amanda Cashman each scored a 9.85. Hawthorne ended the rotation for Georgia adding 9.825 to the team total of 49.100.

Moving on to uneven bars, Georgia earned a team total of 49.250. Junior Katie Finnegan's beautiful routine resulted in a 9.875 for the Bulldogs while De Jong anchored with a solid 9.90.

Wrapping up on beam, the GymDogs totaled 49.225. Senior Vanessa Deniz's impressive performance resulted in a 9.90, the Bulldogs' highest beam score of the afternoon. Freshman JaFree Scott added 9.875 continuing strong for Georgia.

The Bulldogs will continue their season at the 2023 Women's Gymnastics Regionals beginning March 29.
