FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Despite a game defensive effort, the University of Georgia soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 6 Arkansas Thursday evening before 2,020 spectators at Razorback Field.
Redshirt senior midfielder Nicole Vernis led Georgia (6-3-3, 2-2-1 SEC) with two shots, with Arkansas (9-2-1, 5-0-0 SEC) leading the overall shot count, 14-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown tallied three saves, in addition to contributing to the Bulldogs' lone goal with a tremendous goal kick.
In the opening half, Georgia turned in a strong defensive performance, keeping Arkansas scoreless despite a 7-0 shot deficit and a 5-0 corner kick advantage. Brown stood strong, tallying two saves against the consistent Razorback attack. The Bulldogs were also aggressive in the run of play, racking up nine fouls in a physical contest before eventually finishing with 21 for the night.
Early in the second half, the Bulldogs were finally tripped up as the Razorback offense broke through for its first goal. Off a free kick, Arkansas' Kiley Dulaney knocked in the ball for a goal in the 58th minute of play. Three minutes later, Ava Tankersley extended the lead with a score into the bottom right of the goal to make the score, 2-0.
The Georgia offense came to life in the second half, matching Arkansas with seven shots apiece in the period. In the 73rd minute, a massive goal kick from Brown deflected off an Arkansas defender and hit the cross bar, going in for an own goal and cutting the lead in half. The Bulldogs made a valiant effort with three shots in the final 10 minutes, but the score would remain in the Razorbacks' favor as the clock hit full time.
Georgia returns home this Sunday to face rival Florida at 2 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex in the annual "Pink Out" match. Admission is free for all spectators and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
