No. 5 Georgia Falls in Tight Battle with No. 1 TCU

MARTIN, Tenn. --- The fifth-ranked Georgia equestrian team fell in a tight battle with No. 1 TCU, 8-7, on neutral ground on Friday afternoon at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex, hosted by UT Martin.
Earlier in the day, TCU (5-0) defeated UT Martin, 12-7. The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-2 SEC) and Skyhawks (1-4) will face off tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 at noon CT.
Highlighting the meet was juniors Catalina Peralta and Jax Bound who received Most Outstanding Performer honors for their rides against the Horned Frogs. Peralta scored a 85 for her Fences course, marking her second MOP honor of the season. Bound rode to a 70 in Reining, defeating her opponent by a point and a half. This is her first MOP honor of the season, the fourth of her career.
"I'm very proud of the fight and determination in this team although I'm equally frustrated with it coming so close and not far enough," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig. "I'm proud of our individuals, proud of our MOPs, proud of the energy, and it was just little moments that kept us from being the number one team here. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and making improvements against UT Martin."
Georgia split points with TCU in Flat, each winning two rides. Senior Jordan Toering put Georgia on the board, topping her opponent 81-77. The Horned Frogs won the next two points before senior Sophia Pilla closed the event with another point for the Bulldogs. She scored an 89 over Laurel Smith's 86.
Meanwhile in Reining, Georgia took the lead with a 3-1 advantage. TCU won the first Western point of the day before the Bulldogs claimed the final three Reining points. Sophomore Raegan Shepherd scored a 69 for her ride on Flash, while both junior Jax Bound and sophomore Shelby Lynch receives scores of 70 to win their points.
Continuing in Horsemanship, TCU evened the score after winning the first two rides of the event. The Horned Frogs won the remaining two points to take the lead heading into Fences.
TCU won the first Fences point, extending its lead to three. UGA's Tessa Brown scored an 85 for her course, pushing a crucial point. Emma Reichow and Catalina Peralta won the final two points of the day with scores of 84 and 85, respectively, but it was not enough to overtake the Horned Frogs.
Georgia is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 against No. 10 UT Martin at noon CT. The two teams met to open the 2023-24 schedule for the Bulldogs. Georgia defeated the Skyhawks, 13-5, and picked up all four Most Outstanding Performer honors in that meet. Georgia boasts a 10-1 record against the Skyhawks heading into this weekend's matchup.
